I just saw the movie Imagine tonight and he talks about not believing in anything or Imagine there's no Heaven. And when he made that statement that the Beatles were bigger than Jesus. So, what do you think? be nice and serious and not be defensive. I was just curious.

Well, first you should rephrase the question to "was" since John is no longer with us ....

I think the song "Imagine" was aimed at presenting the possibility of a paradise on Earth where everyone loved one another and there was peace without the threat of reward and punishment. (Most religions emphasize reward and punishment.) It was a song, with a nice message. It wasn't intended to be a religious hymn.

As far as his remarks about the Beatles being bigger than Jesus, I don't think he meant "better" or anything akin. More popular? Probably. And sadly, there was probably some truth to that statement.

I think the Jesus statement that he made was not a statement meant to talk down on Jesus. He was comparing Jesus' population with the people of his time with his own population in the modern time. Speaking in ratios, this was true. Jesus was very well known in the area he was in at the time of his life on earth, while John Lennon was known internationally because of modern-time communication of radio and television and therefore more popular.
I don't think he was an atheist because he dabbled in a few religions. I think he slipped in and out of believing in this or that.
That's my view on the subject.

well maybe the beatles were bigger than jesus because of the pure numbers of cultic followers. fanatic teenagers that wanted to rebel against their parents because of false traditions and doctrines.
when lennon says in his song imagine there is no God, it is realized that HE meant that religion is a cause of much war and strife in the world. He wanted people to imagine Peace without borders and religion and thought that getting rid of religion would create such a peace. However, the absence of pure religion which is undefiled will also creat chaos and mayhem. and in such a vaccuum someone will creat false religion to fill its void and the state of mankinds existence is worse than ever it was.
On the other hand, if you study pure faith and religion in history there have been testimonies of historical evidence that prove that true religion Can BRING Greater world wide peace and can even approach the kingdom of God if it were established on the earth.
but even in the history of such a kingdom on the earth, as the story of Enoch whispers from the ancient manuscripts, that the lack of strife does not gain Peferction by itself. it only establishes that some people can go beyond this mortal life and obtain immortality without death on the basis of faith and righteousness alone.

While John Lennon was alive, he tried to rid himself of as many un-useful beliefs as he could, possibly including beliefs about an afterlife. The word "atheism" represents a set of beliefs. If there is a truth to know about what happens after death, John Lennon would be aware of it by now. In either case, it is either certain knowledge or the lack of knowledge, but belief is no longer part of the picture for Mr. Lennon. He has been dead for over twenty years.
John Lennon believed in love. He was a prophet.

I am not to judge. John Lennon may have lived long enough after getting shot to repent to God. But yes he lived his life as an atheist. Now that he is dead, one way or the other he is not an atheist.

What he means by that song is the world would probably be more peaceful if there weren't so many religions that seperate all the people. That's what I think, anyway.
