It is a matter of record that some of the OT people had many wives. But what is recorded in the Bible should not be confused with what is approved and commended in the Bible. Polygamy was never God's original intention for man.

Good question. plural wives is an old philosophy of heirachal origins. The mormon religion teachs that plural wives is Divine godliness. that God himself has more than one wife, which implies that He has more than one son and daughter. check out the book doctrine and covenants section 132 for more precise definitions of what a plural wife and marriage is! The muslims also have koranic teaching that 4 wives is max for motal men. as for historic Harems existing! in the old testament Jewish tradition Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines. many christian theologians say it was nothing more than adultery. But with better study in the scriptures you will find that Solomon was blessed and consecreated, . There was something else that displeased God with solomon.

Because the New Testament called for deacons and Elders of the Church. " To be of one wife". In other words to have only one wife. The values of the Church has changed and asked that all follow this same precept, And thus it became tradition, some sects of Christianity still believe that it is good to have more than one wife,(Namely the Mormons). But most have given up on that doctrine for social and political reasons.

The Roman Family system was monogamous. When Christianity became the state religion, it followed the cultural standards of Rome and not Judea.

Because it was a sign of weath to have many wives to bare your many children to pass on your legacy. Now most people don't want 40 kids. Think about it would you really want more than one wife? Do you really need two wives calling you an idiot?

When early Christian thinkers examined this question, they reckoned:
Christ has only one Bride, the Church. Christian marriage is iconic of the spousal union between Christ and His Church, therefore the most perfect marriage is, like Christ's, monogamous.

Women often died in childbirth and children died in infancy from the diseases they had no cure for. So men took many wives and had many children to ensure that they would have heirs.
