A testament is a testimony or witness. The New Testament is a Christian testimony. The Old Testament, as Christians call it, is the Hebrew writings, which the Jews consider their Bible. While Jews largely do not accept the New Testament, Christian on the other hand largely think much of the Old Testament laws are irrelevant to us today since we are under Grace, not Law.

There are two 'testaments' in the Bible. The 'Old' and the 'New'. The Old Testament is basically a history of God's dealings with the Jewish Nation. Jesus knew of, read and believed every single word of it, knowing it was inspired by his Father in heaven, Jehovah God.
The New Testament is the history of Jesus, and of his time on the earth. Together with the writings of the apostle Paul.
(2 Timothy 3:16-17) All Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be fully competent, completely equipped for every good work.
