It is not a device. Nuclear energy created from unstable molecular structure. But the power plant is actually the device used to control the energy/heat release of this mass producing heat molecule into something usefull.

A nuclear power plant produces energy by bombarding a nuclear fuel, usually uranium with neutrons. When these neutrons his the uranium atoms, the cause the uranium atoms to split apart into smaller atoms, other neutrons, and energy. This is called fission. The other neutrons strike other uranium atoms and create a chain reaction. The energy then heats up water which drives a steam turbine which creates electricity.

The fuel is the source of energy. A nuclear reactor works by bringing together a near-critical mass of uranium or plutonium, so that a chain reaction of nuclear decay ensues, sustained by the neutrons liberated in the process. The reaction is regulated or modulated by movable control rods which absorb neutrons.
