Defense Secretary William Cohen says he will
fight hard to get Congress to restore money for a
controversial, next-generation Air Force fighter jet.
The U-S House of Representatives chopped one-point-
eight-billion dollars from the F-22 (jet) program; the
Senate earlier approved the funding. Supporters of the
F-22 "Raptor" say it will be the best fighter plane
the world has ever seen. Critics say it will be the
most expensive.

well, had you asked me this question 16 years ago, I would've told you the F-14 Tomcat.
Yet today, there have been fantastic advances in aeronatuics and onboard electronic systems.
Being from a US Navy family, I would certainly vote for the F/A-18 Hornet. The US Navy had decommisioed the F-14 and it's role of A-A fighter has been assumed by the F/A-18.
We must also consider the USAF's F-16 and F-15. The Falcon and the Eagle are both nimble aircraft.
Also, the USAF have the newest design of aircraft when we look at the F-22. It is rumored there is supposed to be a naval version of this aircraft in the near future, Yet, as this plane is so new, I do not know enough about it to even compare it against our more conventional aircraft.
Yet we can't limit ourselves to US aircraft. The Russians have great aircraft with the Su-27 Flanker and the Mig-29 Fulcrum.
So to sum up my longwinded response, I'll vote for the F/A-18, yet in the end, .........the pilot makes the aircraft:) So, the next question is.....which nation, or which branch of service has the best pilots?

I would Have to say the F-14 Tomcat. But, Now that they have retired them. It might now be the F-22 Raptor . The F-18 Hornet is also a very good Multi-Purpose Fighter.

no one can pinpoint on one.
F22 of USA is the most fuel efficient. also, it has a remarkable stealth as it looks like a small bird to a radar.
Russia's SU-37 is cosidered to be best in dog-fight. but it is not as fuel-efficient as F22.
