After learning more about choosing quality food for my dog, I'm switching her from Purina Puppy Chow to Nature's Recipe Lamb and Rice.

Anyone know much about Nature's Recipe? I couldn't find much about it.

Here's the ingredients:
Lamb meal, ground rice, pearled barley, oatmeal, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), dried egg, lamb digest, tomato pomace, flax seed, potassium chloride, salt, taurine, vitamins (vitamin E supplement, L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate (source of vitamin C), inositol, niacin supplement, vitamin A supplement, d-calcium pantothenate, thiamine mononitrate, beta-carotene, riboflavin supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride, menadione sodium bisulfite complex, vitamin D3 supplement, folic acid, biotin, vitamin B12 supplement), minerals (zinc proteinate, ferrous sulfate, zinc oxide, iron proteinate, copper sulfate, copper proteinate, manganese proteinate, manganous oxide, calcium iodate, sodium selenite), choline chloride, yucca schidigera, rosemary extract.

To add, here's the "analysis"

Natur's recipe is much better than Purina, but look at the ingredients..Lamb, rice, barely, oats, fat..
The grains are still more than the meat protien..If measured as a whole, they would be the first ingredient..
Better choices are Canidae (my personal fav) Innova, Wellness, Innova Evo, Solid Gold, Natural Balance..
I used to feed Nuto dog food, and my dogs did ok on it..But, since feeding Canidae, the tartar on their teeth is GONE and my old dogs act as young as the youngsters..My dog had great bloodwork (liver and kidney values) at 10 years old.,.The vet was amazed, as it was what would be expected in a 4-5 year old..
I feed several large dogs, and find I actually save money by buying the premium brand..it is a good investment..

Nature's Recipe is an OK food, much better than Purina but I agree with Chetco. I personally like the foods that are either grain free or almost grain free. I fed my dogs Innova EVO for a while, but it was a little too rich for my Shih-tzus and gave them loose stools - however my labX did great on it. I now feed them Timberwolf Organics Wild and Natural and so far they are doing great on it and they LOVE it.

Nature's Recipe is an EXCELLENT dog food. I have three dogs that eat it. One dog does not tolerate lamb in any form very well and so I feed them the Venison and Rice one.
Another thing my dogs love that is available in PetSmart stores is a product called "Lamb Log" or "Beef Log" by "Pet Botanics". My dogs love to have a slice of that cubed and added to their food or cubed and used for treats. It is also very healthy. N.R. does not use artificial preservatives, artificial color or fillers. Here's a site about their food:

I swear by Purina for the kitties. I wouldn't touch Iam's (had a cat who was perfectly healthy then got a raging bladder infection after eating it!) I hate to admit this--but my labs and beagles absolutely love (and thrive on) Wal-Marts Old Roy brand (my daughter in-law started buying it for her Cairn terrier). They're all fat, healthy and happy! My vet told me I've got the healthiest dogs he's ever seen!! (And I hate Wally World!!!!) But I'll suck it up to go and buy dog food!!

The best brand of dog food (IMHO) is Innova and Innova Evo. I don't have the ingredients handly, but it's as close as you can get to feeding raw, without feeding raw.

Purina is a good reputable company. I still choose Science Diet as number one if its available to you, but Iams is number two and Purina is also a great company. If you have the money to spend, Science Diet is a wonderful brand of food for your dog. If not, then purina is a good one also. You should discuss your dogs diet, health, and nutrition with your vet, if they are a good vet, they most likely asked to know what your feed anyhow. Just in case your pet is returned to them and you are unable to get to pick him up for a while. They will want to feed and water him, and its best for them to not have to guess what to feed.

Nature's Recipe is good, but make sure you make the switch slowly. It could upset her stomach, otherwise.
I have also heard wonderful comments on ''Blue Buffalo'', if your local petstore carries that.

if you really want the best protein and food for your dog is to cook it you cook all the vegies up first and while thats still warm add in kangaroo meat which is high in protein but make sure you dont get a processed one but also raw chicken necks are really good for there teeth and they don't get that stinky dog breath but it also gives them a bit more protein and raw kangaroo tail cut up into chunks give it to the dog frozen during summer they will love it
