Heroin is processed from opium.
Opium comes from the sap of the seed pods of the opium poppy.
I am surprised that poppy seeds give a dirty test. However it would be picking up a chemical from the poppy plant.
This could be used as a test for opium or heroin, or any other drug derived from opium.
It is a bad test, because normal poppies do not produce opiates. It would be better to test for opiates instead of chemicals found in other poppies.

You have to eat truckloads of poppy seeds to get a dirty test as opium does not come from the seed but the flower, and if is did show up positive it would be for opiates. Like morphine or heroin or oxycotin

The Poppy is the source for Opium which Heroin is derived from. It is the #1 export of Afghanistan.
During the Viet Nam War era, many eligible draftees would scarf down poppyseed bagels and such by the dozen just to get a "dirty" urine test and then be 4-F'd (flunked) out of the draft. The Armed forces soon caught on and would re-call these same guys back and re-test them. Guess what happened?

Poppy grows the poppy plant which produces drugs like heroin and morphine. It makes a false positive for opiates which includes many pain medications.
