It is better to sit in the middle for the best comfort in turbulance and sudden angle change at take off and landing.
It is better to sit at the front if you have to get off fast when on arrival especialy if you have to transit.
It is better to sit at the back if u want to go on a rollorcoaster on take off as I have been told by an experianced retired piolot that the bottom of the tail can sometimes be 3cm off the ground when at take off. It is common for tail scrapes to occor but the plane can still fly with no risk.
O and this should put u right at the back
Have u ever wondered why the Blak Box vioce recorder (or the orrange box) is at the back of the plane near the tail? Because the tail of an aircraft is the most likly spot to be in tact after a servere crash!
Look at JAL 123 crash in 1986. The 5 survivors were towards the back. The whole of row 56 servived the crash. There are 63 rows in a 747. Although 40 did survive the actual crash, all but 5 sufferd servere bleeding and bled to death.
If u want safty and a rollorcoaster ride, head to the back cause thats where i sat in a 747 and take off felt like the plane was gunna do a backflip!

Depends on your comfort level. Sitting in the back you feel more of the forces on take off, during turbulance etc so if you get motion sick, not an ideal place to sit. Sitting towards the wing you feel less, and the front allows you to be first to exit when you arrive. There is no "safer seat" on the airplane. But the general rule of thumb is try to sit with-in 7 rows of an emergency exit, that way if there is an evacuation and you are in total darkness, or heaven forbid submerged in water, the most you will count is 7 rows forward or back and you're out.

I highly recommend you don't sit at the back.
I sat there on an international flight and it was sooooo noisy! My ears were ringing for 2 days because I couldn't adjust with the jet lag. Also if you've got a weak stomach, and get travel sickness I really wouldn't recommend it since I could feel each climb and turn and dip. Think of what its like to sit at the back of a bus or coach going over a bump.
Sitting on exit row and behind a bulk head is bad since you can't have anything on you at take off and it all has to go in the overhead baggage store. People often gather at exit row because they want to stretch their legs due to DVT scare. Not to mention, you will be next to the toilet! So not much hush time there.
Best place to sit is near the middle since you won't counter any of the above problems.

If you are looking at safety issues, closest to an exit is the best place. I sit in the exit row as often as I can, but then again I am willing to help other people out of the plane if they need help.
If you are talking about where is it most fun to sit, I say at the back of the plane, especially if the engines are on the rear of the aircraft. I love hearing the roar of those engines, especially during the reverse thrust procedure or powerback. I am a very avid aviation enthusiast.

I'm no aviation expert but I was always taught that the tail of the airplane is a good place to be. And also that the mid-area (over the wings) is the strongest area on the airplane.

If you're talking comfort-wise, ask if there are any "bulkhead" seats available. Those are the seats that have a wall in front of them. That way you won't have anyone in front of you pushing their chair into you as they lie back and you'll also have more leg-room.
Some airlines reserve bulkhead rows to families with kids, and only assign them at the airport. But it won't hurt to ask.

closer to the front . If the tail rips off at least you might have a fighting chance of not being taken off with it
