The best rums are from the Caribbean. Anything "viejo" (old) from Dominican Republic, Cuba or Jamaica.

A good bottle of run aged 15-20 years old and is golden brown is smooth enough to be drank pleasantly on ice. Look to spend about $30-40 US, $35-45CAD or about 200 pesos - it's also a hell of a lot cheaper in the Caribbean. If you know anyone that goes there for vacations, ask them to bring back a souvenir you can actually enjoy.

Coruba is a good dark rum, Coruba also does a Coruba Gold which is lovely....Bacardi is a good white rum.... All depends on your taste....

Don't take my word for it try it, go to a bar or liqour store and see if they will allow you to try before you buy, some places do tasting so it's worth a try.... Or go to a liqour store and buy a miniature and find out which ones you like before buying the larger bottles.... I know miniatures can be expensive for what they are but it's one way for trying before buying a large bottle.....

Good luck and happy tasting and trying....

Sailor Jerry is good, warms you up quick (is 93 proof, if I remember right), and the Brown Derby by my campus has a fifth for under $10 most of the time.
