i am a grade 10 student and i am free during 80% of the day. I really love dogs and i am looking forward to spending all my time with it. But i also want a dog that wouldn't shed much, wouldnt take a dump or make accidents in the house and not wreck the house cus we just moved in and i really love this house. Also i want the dog to be smart and easy to train and to be really cute so girls wuld say "awwww when they see it" :-) .I mean i love border collies but everyone says they are ugly!! and i hate it when they say that!!

My husband and I are the proud owners of a 9 mth old Golden Retriever. We used a crate to help potty train him, and he only had like 3 accidents ever - they were all pee. So, he did really good with that.

We love our 70 lb. puppy - any time we take him out with us, everyone always tells us how cute he is and what a good dog he is. He is very affectionate and loves to spend time with anyone! Our golden is very loyal.

He does shed, but most dogs do. The blessing we have is our hardwood floor. The hair just clumps together and we can clean it up easily.

Best of luck choosing a new dog! =)

All of the dogs you stated have long hair so there will be a lot more shedding then a short haired dog plus a lot more grooming. German Shepards are very pretty dogs plus are extremely smart as well as the other two dogs you have mentioned.

Remember that you are going to have a few accidents in your house until they are house trained unless you get an older dog that is already housebroken.

I'd say if you really love border collies then get one. Do a little bit of research on them to tell if you think they would be a great fit for you. They are beautiful dogs that are extremely smart, excellent protectors but are extremely active because they are a "herding" dog. They are easy to train and very lovable, but like I said require a lot of time running around and doing things.

This is your call. You are the only one that can decide which dog is right for you PERSONALLY.

Hope this helps a little

Border Collies are a cool guys dog. I think all the breeds you selected will shed and will have a few accidents in the house. Patience, training, love all the good stuff, it will pay off.

Border Collies can be annoying (high drive) they need a job, they are acorbatic and love chasing things.

German Shepards are multipurpose but as a chic I always think guard dog and steer clear. Not the best choice if you want girls to admire you and your dog. Check with the breeder for appropriate health testing on this breed.

Gold Retrievers are friendly, out going, energetic. A lot of woman like these dogs, but they fall to many health problems, so check with the breeder.

I say the Border if it was up to me. By the way they are adorable.

It depends. If you have most of your day free, that's great all around. Do more research on each breed you're interested in - check out the AKC's website, for one; they even have a quiz you can take to recommend a dog breed for you!

German shepherds are beautiful and intelligent. They need a lot of "maintenance" - especially if you go long-haired. This means daily walks or fetch, etc. We're talking at least 20-30 minutes each day, preferably more. You have to be willing to spend time training them, because if they're not well trained they tend to be a bit aggressive. Also, here in the US the breed is known for having some health problems. The most common is hip probelms- and trust me, hip replacement for a dog costs far more than the dog is worth, at least materially. (A good dog is priceless...) :)

Retrievers are gorgeous, also intelligent, and have pretty much well-rounded personalities. They are great with kids and families, and very loyal. They don't have a lot of health problems that I'm aware of.They have sweet temperaments and are farily easy trainers. They are not "guard dogs" and don't have the tendency to bark alot. They're more of a companion-type dog. You'll have a life-long friend.

Border collies are also great dog. They do tend to be a bit hyper, as well as more yippy, but if this doesn't bother you and you enjoy the breed, then go for it!! They are a little more high maintenance in terms of attention...they sponges who would soak up every free second you (and your hands) have! They're great at games and sports like agility and flyball....and are relatively easy trainers...be careful though, they can be a bit shy/timid. Just make sure you get a nice plump puppy whos been at the top of the food chain and isn't so shy.

Good luck; they're all really great breeds, so choose what you want. I have two shelties, whom I absolutely adore, and I wouldn't trade them for anything!

If you want a dog that is smart then German Shepards are a good choice. I have one and she is really smart. However, with shedding I dont think any of the breeds you mentioned are gonna be low shedders. They all have a lot of fur. As far as not taking a dump in the house...the dog would have to housebroken or a puupy that you housebreak. And Border Collies are hyper and require alot of time which u said you had. As far as what other people think about you dog, it doesnt matter as long as you like it. I agree with the person who mentioned Aulstrian Shepards. They are pretty and smart but hyper too. Good luck

GSD's and BC's are going to be a lot of training and need LOTS of time to run. BC's always need a job to do or they will FIND a job like tearing the house apart. GSD's without proper training and enough can become aggressive or terrorize the house. I think the Golden would be the best bet. They do have long hair though so when they blow their coat once a year (twice for bitches) you will have a lot of hair around the house. Labradors are like Goldens and have short hair but they shed a lot as well. You have to be willing to put up with certain things in order to have a best friend. I would recommend the Golden though as I said because they are adorable, very smart, and exceptional dogs all the way around. Make sure to get yours from a good breeder, one who asks you questions and isn't just breeding their pet for a buck. If you do that, you will end up with hip problems (CHD), PRA and other conditions. Make sure the breeder tests their dogs for these (they will know what these are, if they don't then they aren't a good breeder). Best of luck with your new best friend. Please make sure she sleeps in the house as well, has adequate clean water whenever you’re gone and gets a good meal twice a day. :-)

Edit: What other people have said here about getting what you want is irresponsible. If you buy a dog which was meant to live in the country and needs lots of room (like a BC or Siberian Husky) then force it to live in the city with only a small back yard, you are putting your wants above their best interest. And that is why so many dogs end up in rescue or the pound, because people bought the wrong dog for their lifestyle, didn't do their research, and now the poor dog is wreaking havoc because they don't get enough exercise. I'm sorry but you can't choose a breed on looks. You have to understand that there are hundreds of years of past breeding running in that dog’s blood and you aren't going to change them just because you want to. Thank you to this poster for looking before he leaps.

No one should tell you what to get. It's all your choice.
Golden Retrievers AND Labradors are extremely well trained.
Female dogs are more tame, I figure. My girl Golden Lab is extremely friendly. Golden Labs and Retrievers are the more common seeing-eye companions. Rescue dogs are also great, could be German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, or a golden retriever.
All of the 3 types of dogs you named are very intelligent and beautiful.

If you want a German Shepherd, get one.
If you want a Golden Retriever, get one.
If you want a Border Collie, then get one!!

I really hope this helps. Good luck!

Border collies are awesome dogs but they are super hyper and should have something to do, that's why they are a good choice as a farm dog, but as long as you have alot of energy and don't mind playing frisbee or taking it for long walk or jogs then you should be fine, it's your call, i think you would like an australian shepard to tell you the truth, and they are very pretty dogs girls love em- speaking as one :), Good Luck
