Well, if you wanna be technical about it, there's no such thing as an atheist. See, one of the definitions of "atheist" is that you -know- that there is no God or Supreme Being etc. It's impossible for one to -know- that, because no one knows everything that was, is, and is to come. And no one knows everything, so you can't rule out a God or Supreme Being ever. If you go with the more popular definition, "Someone who doesn't believe in a God," this still is self-conflicting. One of the definitions of a God is an idol, and one of the definitions of an idol is something that rules your life. When asked the question, "What rules your life" most "atheists" will reply, "I do." You are your own god. So..in the technical sense, no one is an atheist. But that's all just semantics, and really doesn't matter. The heart of the issue is the reason behind why the person chose to believe that. Atheism hasn't been around "as long as religion" either, because the first people around knew there was a God, Adam and Eve. Anyhow, even Moses had his doubts about God, doubts are implanted into our minds. Some people could stare God in the face and still proclaim He is non-existant. But for the question, atheism is more of a result of narrow-mindedness, how I see it, an excuse to do evil. I might be wrong though, be easy on me!

in Indian philosophy, chawarka is deemed to be person responsible for atheism.
he preached the life based on means for ends.i.e artha means and Kama ends. his philosophy is 'feed on the ghee; even though you run into debts.' he preached life is as natural as five elements in the universe. however his philosophy could not flourish due to lack righteousness and salvation namely dharma and moksha as per Indian philosophy.
