I dont know meaning of this sickness called Talasima?

I heard about this sickness via air (Radio) yet i dont understand what is Talasima and how we know that someone had this sickness what r the symptom. This something new iam listening on the air.

Thalassemia is a heriditary condition in which the structure of hemoglobin is abnormal. Red blood cells are destroyed rapidly and frequent blood transfusions are required. Death is usually due to comlications caused by the deposition of iron in various organs.
