we know jesus existed because the romans wrote the history of that time. they were the dominant power and were not fans of jesus or the jews, or any other sub-group of that era. you'll recall that they were the ones who actually crucified him at the jews request. also they persecuted the jews and other religious minorities after the death of christ. rome would be a pagan government for quite some time after the death of christ. your concern is over whether or not jesus was a divine being. did he do the things that are written? was he who he claimed to be? not did he exist. the victors of that period wrote their historys and acknowledged jesus.

There is something known as historicity, that is the relative accuracy of a historical event. The life of the historic Jesus is shrouded in mystery. There are only three original sources that speak of it. The New Testament, Flavius Josephus, and Tacitus. And, Tacitus is a spurious reference.
Ian Wilson, in the book "Jesus:The Evidence", discusses the theories that Jesus never lived. However, the conclusion based on a large consensus of historians was that there was, indeed, a historical figure of that name during New Testament times. It is quite interesting that the archaeological evidence of recent discovery seems to support the events, and persons mentioned in the New Testament surrounding the life of Jesus of Nazareth. If you e-mail me I can detail some of these findings.
The irony is that such a huge religious movement was based on the life of such an obscure historical figure.
Modern Christian theology has de-emphasized the historical Jesus and reinforced the importance of the Christ of Faith. Two of the main proponents of the view were Karl Barth and Paul Tillich. Basically, Christian belief must be a faith based on the will or choice of the believer.
Most of the doubts about if Jesus lived were expressed recently, in the 19th Century and beyond. I don't think that these doubts were expressed in the early centuries after his life even by enemies of the religion.
In conclusion, the life of Jesus has historicity but that doesn't take us very far.

to my knowledge, there is no concrete evidence that jesus was a real person. all that is available is what was written three decades after he was supposed to have lived, and those works which were written at even later times.
as for the davinci code- dan brown has stated that he used facts that may or may not be accurate, as well as fictional acts to create a believable scenario, not one that was to be taken as anything more than a good read. the idea that it has to be accepted for some historical fact is not his, but that it must be denounced was just the knee-jerk response of religious ideologues who felt threatened by any and all information which is either contrary to their dogma, or which could even remotely question it. their fear is nothing less than the same attitude which kept europe under constant turmoil throughout history for the last two thousand years

Very Simply: You may ask me how I know my Lord is real.
You may doubt the way I feel and say. But I know He's real today, He'll always be, I can feel "His Hand In Mine" and thats enough for me.
Below if you're interested is a rather lengthy text of historcal facts and scripture.
1- The uniqueness and unity of the scriptures
-There were 40+ authors whose inspired writings are included in the Canon of Scripture.
-The period of writing spanned 1500-1600 years
-Written from many different cultures, on three continents, in three different languages.
-With all these things considered there is amazing unity because behind it all there is one author.
2- Can you trust the accuracy?
how do we know that what we have today is what was written thousands of years ago.
The truth is that out of all ancient literature, The New Testament is the most well-authenciated document. With an overwhelming amount of evidence supporting its reliability.
- Evidenced by the number of manuscripts. Many of most well known works of antiquity, such as the works of Plato and Aristotle, are known from only 25-40 manuscripts(not the original writings, but copies made by others dating to within a few hundred years of the authors writing.) We have over 6000 manuscripts of parts of the New Testament which were written within the first two centuries A.D.
- Evidenced by the reliability of the text. Manuscripts were hand copied which would increase the chances of mistakes. The Iliad of Homer contains 15,600 lines literary scholars question the complete accuracy of 746 lines(due to error or omissions.) The New Testament contains 20,000 lines and only 40 lines are questioned. But even more important is the fact that even among the few 'contested lines' not one related to a major doctrinal issue.
- Evidenced by the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls (1948).
Before their discovery the oldest Old Testament manuscripts dated to the tenth century A.D. (Masoretic text.) The Dead Sea Scrolls contained, for example, a scroll of the complete text of the book Isaiah-dated 125 B.C. when compared, with about one thousand years between them, scholars found almost no changes/mistakes-the integrity of the text was remarkably well perserved.
3- The power of the word of God.
- For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than a two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the herart. Hebrews 4:12
- Source of faith: So then faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. Romans 10:17
- The bible is a source of comfort, encouragement, guidance, confrontation, and conviction...
- All scripture is God breathed and is useful for teaching. rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thourougly equipped for every good work.
2 Timothy 3:16-17.
- Powerful in prayer and spiritual warfare
- It is written (Matthew 4:1-11)
Jesus when tempted by the devil, drew upon the most powerful weapon available to him- The Word of God.
There was no argument as to the power of the written word.

The losers, according to history, wrote books of the New Testament. Peter, for example, was crucified. Matthew was murdered. John was either murdered or martyred. And so forth.
We know that the victors and conquerors didn't write the manuscripts and postdate them because of extensive scholarship done on the manuscripts.

Biblical history was written by prophets who testified of Christ before he was ever born, and those prophesies came true. Then those who were WITH Christ wrote first-hand accounts of His life and teachings. Throngs of people saw him, heard him, were blessed by him. There are many more books and writings we haven't found yet that will also testify of Him (the Bible itself mentions 20 or more). If Christ never existed, there would be no Christianity today, and no Bible.

In what way did Jesus conquer in any worldly sense of the term? That argument would make sense if the people who founded the religion had anything to gain from what they were preaching. In fact most of the suffered and died for it.
