He is actually a medical doctor and child psychologist, and is neither a priest nor a pastor. He wrote books on the family, and on raising children. He eventually formed an organization called Focus on the Family, one of its popular ministries was to show a series of short films discussing family matters. Dr. Dobson has, in past years, felt it was important to involve himself in indirectly politics, and has made his views known quite often. Because he has publicly supported politicians on the right, such as President Bush, and many republican senators, he has lent credence to the reputation of evangelicals as being "The Religious Right". Personally, I do not agree with his politics, but I do appreciate his passion for the family. He has done a lot of good.
I think he deserves his following a lot more than the likes of Pat Robertson. His close involvement with political figures could end up harming his reptutation: if they fall he will be splattered. And they are not exactly untouchable angels! In other words I think he is being naive.

James Dobson is a pediatric psychologist whose organization, Focus on the Family, is the core of an influential multimedia group that advocates practices derived from evangelical Christian values. Dobson received his PhD. in child development from the University of Southern California and spent the late 1960s and early '70s as a professor and clinician. His book, Dare to Discipline (1970) was a best-seller, a direct assault on what Dobson saw as the evils of permissive parenting. The author of several self-help books and the host of an internationally broadcast radio show, Dobson also lectures often and wields considerable influence in the political arena, thanks to the political arm of his organization, the Family Research Council. He has been active in the Republican party since the administration of Ronald Reagan and is considered a behind-the-scenes power broker for his involvement in the administration of George W. Bush. Dobson is a well-known opponent of homosexuality and same-sex marriage and in recent years has made headlines for comments regarding the "homosexual agenda" of the mainstream media. In 2005 he made headlines for his comments comparing embryonic stem cell research with experiments conducted by Nazi Germany during World War II

Dr. James Dobson is the founder of the Christian group " Focus on the Family" a christian values oriented group which is responsible for the publication of many christian radio programs. He has recently come under fire by the gay community because he supports reparative therapy , which in many cases helps gay persons leave the gay lifestyle and refound their lives in a new and wonderful spiritual way.The success stories of this therapy runs against the "
born gay" and "gay for life" propaganda and has ruffled a lot of feathers among the gay activists.

He is the founder of Focus on the Family. He has many books out and also has small group studies out. I belong to a group that is currently using his Essentials of Discipline video seminar/small group study and it's wonderful. I really like him. Sorry I can't tell you more about him, but I imagine if you go to www.family.org, you can find more info as it's the site for Focus on the Family.

Leader of Focus on the Family http://www.focusonthefamily.com/
He is a right-wing conservative pastor, who has a huge national following and is heavily involved in politics. Here is a link that discusses his importance in the Bush camp http://www.slate.com/id/2109621/ To quote this article...
One corollary to this idea is that no one helped Bush win more than Dr. James Dobson. Forget Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson, who in their dotage have marginalized themselves with gaffes (this week Robertson referred to potential Supreme Court nominee Miguel Estrada as "Erik Estrada"). Forget Ralph Reed, now enriching himself as a lobbyist-operative, leaving the Christian Coalition a shell of its former self. Forget Gary Bauer, now known chiefly as a failed presidential candidate who tumbled off a stage while flipping pancakes. Dobson is now America's most influential evangelical leader, with a following reportedly greater than that of either Falwell or Robertson at his peak.
Hope that helps.

Grace unto you, and peace,
from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Dr James Dobson's Ph D = Piled high Dung(Law).
His mission statement is about "sacrifice"(slaughter):
http://www.focusonthefamily.com/aboutus/A000000408.cfm
The will of God is: "I will have mercy, and not sacrifice".
And the "not" part is not then, not now, not ever.
God never desired sacrifice for sin: Hebrews 10.
(See also Ps 40:6; Ps 51:16; Hos 6:6; Mt 9:13).
Our Father, deliver us from evil: Mt 6:13
We are delivered form the law: Rom 7:6
The GRACE of our Lord Jesus Christ WITH YOU ALL. AMEN.
