As far as I can tell, the Bible would be the oldest record of the word being used. I really liked the link in the first answer by Abbygirl. It said that "amen" is the value 99 in Greek, and that in the Old and New Testaments the word occurs 99 times. That's kind of a trip. I also agree with most of the definitions so far.

Amen is a Hebrew word for affirmation like saying "here here" or let it be
the reason Muslims would say something similar is because Arabic is a Semitic language like Hebrew and Aramaic.
for example the word for God in Aramaic is Alah (just like Allah in Arabic) just like the word Aliyah that means going up in Hebrew it refers to an entity above or in the heavens

Actually it originated, as far as we know, from Hebrew. So, the Jewish people. It probably even predates them but that is where Christians and Muslims get it from. It simply means, "Let it be so" or, "Let it turn out this way". Thats why it is said at the end of prayers and blessings.

Amen is a Hebrew word, found repeatedly in the hebrew Old Testament of the Bible, that means 'Let it be so.' I did not realize Muslins use this word.
