Whilst it is good to protect a lot of forest areas for posterity and in order not to disturb some of the wildlife too much there is a lot of hype talked about the rainforest.

Aforestation is not just bad it is tremendously damaging to the earths climate. This is because the trees are removed and the carbon/oxygen cycle with them. Hungry crops are then grown that denude the soil in a few years leaving it infertile and prone to erosion.

But virgin forest is not the blessing that many ecologists would have us believe!

It has now been shown that whilst young growing trees consume a large amount of carbon and give of smaller amounts of oxygen.- older trees actually reverse the process and can become carbon emitters!

It would therefore make more sense to use some forests as a renewable resource. This would have three benefits. (1) it would ensure a continuous supply of carbon eating, oxgen producing young trees. (2). It would provide work and income for locals therefore obviating the need for them to chop down trees to grow food. (3) it would provide a truly green supply of good timber and biofuel.

There isn't a reason NOT to cut down old growth forests. Trees are a renewable resource. Loggers cut down most of the trees in an area (notice "most", they leave some) and plant 100 tree seedlings for every tree they cut. Thus, RENEWABLE. When there is a fire, the downed and burnt trees should be harvested. Then new trees are planted and there is a new forest.

The problem is that the "environmentalist", fight to do NOTHING, then the downed trees rot and no new trees are planted.

Oldgrowth trees are crucial to erosion and flood control since their root systems are the largest, and they are often the only habitat of certain species of animals.
