Pretty much what Harleygal said. I have seen a lot of suffering in dying parents and grandparents. Suffering is caused by pain or disturbance, and can be made far worse or better by one's attitude toward it.
Personally, I think mental-emotional suffering is the far worst of all because as I think it was Milton said, in effect: The mind is heaven or hell.
I hope this and other answers helps you quantify and qualify the overall complex that is suffering.

Suffering comes from things that are out of your control, and grasp. When things hurt emotionaly and physically suffering is the result. I disagree with the person who says suffering is optional. No one would hurt if it was in their power. Disease brings suffering, child abuse, mental abuse, verbal abuse, and being oppressed.

Throughout history Jews suffered persecution, and that was not a choice. We have to choose to move on while suffering, and to continue to make right decisions. You also have to believe in a brighter day.

Pain is inevitable in life, but suffering is optional. Suffering is an attitude in the face of pain.

We all suffer. It is about the most powerful motivator there is in life. Unfortunately most of us fail to pay attention to it and so our lives continue to suck. Those that pay attention to it, do the things consistently that make life a joy, even in the face of unimaginable pain.

Hi. I am a nurse and have seen a lot of "suffering". It is when people either mentally or physically cannot be made comfortable. No medication or therapy will help them...they just constantly hurt. It is very sad and hard to see/experience.

I'll tell you what....if you live my life for about half of it you'll know what suffering is........if you don't know what it is....and I'm guessing that you don't because you have to ask the question.....be good and try to make the BEST choices in life! Oh, I forgot...yu really want to know what suffering is....well, it's like this......you have something you love....you lose it...then you have something you love again...then you lose it.....then you lose your self worth, your money, your job......you're back....and then...you lose it! That's suffering!
