A weekend or a week alone with you. You can book it now and call AAA or a travel agent for tickets and a triptych map set, etc.

Put a bunch of hints about the details into a box and wrap it up.

Nowadays, the thing kids need most from their parents is time. It is becoming a rare commodity. This is also a great time to bring up and discuss the "Manly" facts of life.

In the box you could put a map with the route marked on it, some ads for camping gear or hotels in the target area, etc.

Use magazines to make cutouts of a hotels, tourist spots, a tent, sleeping bags, camp stove, trees, a creek, pond, dock, or kayaking, etc. his favorite sport, marshmallows, hot dogs, a big campfire, even a story you write yourself about what you think you might do on your trip.

After he opens the box, get him to sit down with you on the computer or with some travel brochures to decide where you want to go and plan the trip together.

Your love is the best thing in the world to give your son.

I was just in your situation this past summer and rather than try to be creative and think of something spectacular....I simply asked him (I have 5 children and they are all different in their tastes) My son actually gave me a list of five prioritized items. Number one on the list was a cell phone, number two was no cheesy birthday party with all the relatives, number three was a slumber party with seven of his friends in the tent in the backyard with no mom and dad hovering around, number four was a paintball gun and number five was a free year of no chores.

we gave him the cell phone (pre-pay....and ideal at that age, that way they have to work to earn their minutes..whoever invented that was a genius) and he got to have the slumber party with some ground rules so they weren't terrorizing the neighborhood.

I know in this day and age, gifts for kids are so hard. There is so much out there and they are growing up so fast that a parent literally has to either know their child like the back of their hand and be with them 24/7 to figure it out, or they have to come out and just ask. Asking is safer, that way...you can't go wrong.

Good luck and welcome to the teenage years!

He is not into music? My 13 year old wants a xbox 360, but I cannot afford it. He also wants an ipod.

My son just told me that you should ask him what he likes. Or just give him money. He said that if he knew what he likes then he would have plenty of suggestions. Like skate board stuff.

I would ask him to give you some ideas. Each teen is different and I would rather get mine something he likes. You can also add some other smaller gifts as surprises, so that he does not know everything he's getting.

Maybe he would like a computer for his room, a cell phone (if he does not have one.)

it all depends on what he likes. if he's into music you could get him some concert tickets to go see his favorite singer. or you could make him a gift basket of the things he likes. you could get him a gift card from his favorite store. you could get him one of those educational laptops. if he's a really good student at school with good grades just ask him what he wants and get it for him.
