I'm fresh out of high school at 19 years old. I've decided that attending a 4 year university would be too difficult at this point in my life and I want to join a branch of the military. Preferably I do not want to be stationed on or around Iraq, because I don't exactly agree with everything going on over there, although I understand there are no guarantees. I've heard there are different rankings in terms of quality of life, and I'm looking for everyones opinion on this issue. Thanks a lot in advance, Garrett.

Please note that my decision to not go to a 4 year school is not limited to the fact that I am lazy or undetermined, there are a variety of other contributing factors that I would rather not discuss at the moment. I'd like to thank everyone again for there answers thus far and I'll have a lot of thinking to do in the near future.

i don't think that the cost guard deployes overseas anywhere....if they do then its news to me. air force does deploy to iraq, usually with the army. and navy does llllloooonnnnnggggg cruises which means being cooped up on a boat for months. but i don't think they go to iraq unless they are docs for the marines.

I think that if you are considering the military, you should be considering it for the right reasons. From what you have said, you do not have the right reasons. Being in the military shouldn't be a cop out because its "too difficult" to go to college. If you are only in it for reasons like you previously stated, then chances are, you'll regret it. Not every one can be a soldier, and you have really got to have the heart for it, not "Well, it'd be easiest." Because it won't be. However, if there is more to it than that cop out reason, then I would advise that you join the Coast Guard, ESPECIALLY if you plan on having a family. I know that the Navy is gone for a LONG time, not to mention the ever popular (though not always true) rumor that men in the Navy are homosexuals. :) But seriously, the Air Force is also pretty likely to get deployed, and as far as I know, the chances aren't real high that the coast guard gets sent off. But definitely, if you don't want to go to Iraq, do not choose the other two. Personally, I think that if you do not agree with what's going on over there and you don't want to be there, then the military is not a good choice for you, because once you make the choice to join, they don't give the choice of whether or not you want to go overseas. I would sit down and put a lot of thought into this before you commit yourself. Good Luck!

I can' t really comment on the Navy since I have no experience with them. My husband is Active Duty Air Force. We love the life. He does get deployed for 90 days at a time usually about twice a year. It all depends on your MOS as to where you go in Iraq, Afghanistan, ect and how long you are there. The support for the AF is wonderful. We've never had any problems that we didn't receive help with. Housing depends on your base. I've lived in some awesome houses and also some real dumps. Promotions are automatic to E-4 and then you have to test for every rank after that. We move every 2 years and we enjoy it immensely.
My brother is Active Duty Coast Guard and he really enjoys that as well. He is currently assigned to a boat and spends roughly 6 months out. He's gone to Columbia and come back with fabulous coffee, he's sunbathed in Jamacia, he's been to the Caribbean so many times I can't remember. The Coast Guard does go to Iraq but right now it's all volunteers, there are no mandatory deployments. In Iraq, they basically guard the harbors. He has never lived in housing, he and his wife bought a house and thier BAH is paying thier mortgage payment. Making rank is faster at the lower levels than the AF but it is harder to advance at higher ranks. He currently works on the boat but is crosstraining to work on Helicopters and C-130's.
Hope this helps a little!

All 3 of them are a good choice The AF jobs are like civilian jobs, the navy is ? I was not in the navy, the Coast Guard goes to Iraq as well as the Navy and the AF. But , the USCG is chill I have friends that are USCG and they try to get me to join all the time.

Go to college, don't run away from your problems, the military isnt a good choice for you in this circumstance, who knows... Maybe you might regret joining and end up serving 8 years and not being able to go to a 4 yr university, go to college then join..
But not before...
but join the Navy, longer deployments but your in a ship.. hehe..

Let me tell you something!!!People come to the United States to receive education with 1 dollar in their pocket. They make it through very hard work, lots of studies and big dreams in their heads. They pay MUCH higher tuition than American Citizens. They achieve their goals and they become succesful professionals. Why in the world you want to put your life at Uncertainty when someone in the White House comfortable chair will decide for you if you are going to live or die. Why are you lazy? Why do you need to take that route? Do not you love your life and do not you have people that love you??? Think!!!! Make an effort and go to college and you have everything you need to make it come true!!

So you want a SAFE job, while the rest of your buddies risk their butts? I am not sure you should join the military. No one is safe anyway, you could get hit by a truck tomorrow. Go to college, how's that?

Air force, or Navy are the least demanding and have the least chance of seeing the enemy during the fight if you ever see combat. At least in this conflict!
