I'm not sure if I mis-heard my vet but I think she told me heartworm medication helps get rid of other worms that could develop. Is this true?

I'm talking more along the lines of "digestive worms"

i.e. tapeworms etc...

Depends on the heartworm meds you got. Most of the more 'popular' ones get all of the worms such as tapeworms, roundworms, oh yeah and hookworms... ect. If you dont know which one you got phone your vet clinic and ask and just say you would like to double check as to which worms the dog will be protected from. They can look on the boxes and let you know!
I do know off hand Interceptor does not get tapeworms but it does get all the rest while the pour on ones like Revolution or Advantage should get all as well as fleas.

Types Of Heartworm Prevention

You did not mention what heartworm preventative your pet is on. Heartgard, for example, also protects against roundworms and hookworms. It does not protect against tapeworms.

I've heard conflicting reports that Revolution can also protect against these parasites (rounds and hooks) but I'm not sure if it's actually on the label (meaning that it's been approved for such use).

Take a look at the packaging, it should tell you what the product is labelled for.
I think the Heartgard/Frontline combination covers the most parasites and they're the safest products for your pets.

Heartgard is commonly used for the prevention of heartworms and the main drug that is used in heartgard is called Ivermectin, which is an Anthelminthic (dewormer).. It is also in combination with the drug Pyrantel pamoate, which is commonly used to treat roundworms and hookworms. So, in answer to your question, it really depends on what type of heartworm med. that your vet prescribes (some of the older vets will just prescribe ivermectin) but heartgard is the most popular preventative and, yes, it will prevent against roundworm and hookworm infestation.

There are a few real keys to dog training, whether you are trying to train your dog to come when called, sit, stop barking or any other behavior. Understanding their importance is critical to achieving rapid results that are long lasting and help develop the bond between you and your dog. Read more here https://biturl.im/aU7RE

The first is simple; you must win your dogs mind. If you don't achieve this first then you will be struggling the all the way. When I talk about winning your dogs mind what I really mean is that your dog looks to you for all the decisions. Before you do anything else watch one of the amazing video sites that show you the 5 Golden rules to establishing yourself as the pack leader. If you aren't putting these in place then you are setting yourself up to fail. Just at the crucial point where you really want your dog to listen they will go and do their own thing. For sure your dog may play ball occasionally or even most of the time, you may even have a dog that is obedient 99% of the time, however if you want a dog who always listens to you and does as you ask then you need to win your dogs mind.

The second key to success is to motivate your dog. It is really important that you discover what it is that your dog enjoys both in terms of exercise and play but also in terms of a reward. If you can make the experience enjoyable then you will both achieve more and look forward to training.

Some dogs love to fetch, others love agility, and other dogs simply love obedience training, or swimming out into water and retrieve. At least to start with find out what your dogs love is and help them develop this, what I am saying is work with your dog. The other point to recognize is to make training enjoyable reward your dog.

YES! The heartworm med will protect your dog from other parasites. That is the reason most Vets tell you to continue the medication year round.

It will get rid of other "heart" worms, or worms in the heart, but things like hookworms who are on there liver and such are not because the poison is not in the liver or any other places on the body other than the heart.
