No, it doesn't have to be expensive. First- take the bus instead of taxis- but make sure you have a lot of quarters (bus drivers do not make change).
The best buy in the city is in Little Italy--- go to ANY restaurant around 3 pm for a "late lunch" and you will be surprised at how cheap the meals are. (my favorite place is Perugino's and have the stuffed mushroom for an appetizer). Go to battery park and you can take the ferry to see the statue of liberty. Of course, if this is your first trip to New York, you have to go over to the World Trade Center memorial--- and I'm not sure how much it is now, but you can tour the Empire state building-- if you google these places, they should list the prices-- oh, cant miss chinatown which is next to little Italy-- great deals on stuff-- dont forget to haggle with them- they are willing to deal especially if you start to walk away!!! Have a great time.....................
PS If you are going in December ( I think they light the tree December 6th) you HAVE to go see the tree- and if you're into ice skating- Rockafeller center--lots of fun
