In ancient Jewish tradition Satan is simply an angel doing the work that God assigned to Satan to do.
The word Satan means challenger. With the idea of Satan challenging us, or tempting if you will. This description sees Satan as the angel who is the embodiment of man's challenges. This idea of Satan works closely with God as an integral part of Gods plan for us. His job is to make choosing good over evil enough of a challenge so that it becomes clear to us that there can be only one meaningful or logical choice.
Contrast this to Christianity, which sees Satan as God's opponent. In Jewish thought, the idea that there exists anything capable of setting itself up as God's opponent would be considered polytheistic or setting up the devil to be an equally powerful polarity to god or a demigod.
Oddly, proof for The Christian satan/devil mythology is supposedly found in the ancient Jewish texts that were borrowed to create the bible. One can’t help but wonder how Christians came up with such a fantastically different interpretation of Gods assistant Satan in their theology.
Other hints about Satan’s role in human relations can be seen if you look at the name Lucifer. It’s meaning in the original tongue translates as Light bearer or light bringer. Essentially the bringer of enlightenment. The temptations of the Satan idea bring all of us eventually into Gods light. Hardly the Evil entity of Christian mythology.

Satan was once in God's court of angels..and because of a huge problem Satan was banned from heaven and God made him live in Hell for ever,
but I was told that God has a reason for every single thing, and he needed Satan in his grand theme and Satan is a part of our own free will, if God did away with Satan, we would not need or have our own free will, this way we as humans have to make choices some good some bad...that's where our free will comes into play...

Because believe it or not, Satan has free will too! So God lets him act, at least to some extent, within certain bounds. But Satan can do nothing that God can't deal with. Consider him a chained dog that barks real loud, but can't get past the fence.

Romans 11:29 The gifts and callings of God are without repentance,
that means that God will never take away the gifts that he has given, even to Satan.

Maybe God is not able to take away Satans power. If God is so great. Why do 1/3 of the angels pick the side of satan? Why is it the one thing that is forbiden to mankind is the tree of knoledge? Why does satan want mankind to choose knowledge? Then God punishes mankind for it. Maybe its because knoledge is power and humakind is not created to have such a power.

He did it 2,000 years ago at the cross.
Satan has only the power you give him, nothing more. His lease is up on the earth and you can expect a cataclysmic change any day now.

From the concept of yin and yang, As long as there is Good, evil must exist to oppose it. Just like shadows and light, one must exist in order for the other function. I dunno if you are going to understand this, but all this notions of Good and Evil comes from Man itself. If you believe that God exist, your heart will automatically register the presence of Satan, Hence, God cannot take away Satan's power, only you can

Satan doesn't have any powers, he has the power that you give him to control your life! Also He doesn't have power because Satan always petitions for us. If God approves of what he petitions he lets him.

If your still very much in your Christian belief, I wouldn't question this any further, especially if you have faith. But since you asked this question here, then you really want to know. Christian ministers or elders will no doubt tell you that God gave every being, angels, demons, humans, and yes Satan himself the choice of whether they want to live a good or evil lifestyle. But for my personal opinion the God portrayed in the Bible is an insane being. I mean, come on. He's very willing to inflict punishment on humans who don't follow his ways, but he's willing to let a powerful evil spirit being (who he also created) LIVE for an undecided number of years AND let it wreck havoc on the humans on earth?? Where exactly is His priorities???
