All men do this, whether they know it or not. What he is doing is just backing far enough off to feel the tention again. Think of it as if the two of you were holding a bubber-band. If he is pulling and you follow or chase after him, the tention will not be there and he will loose interest. If you stay grownded, and even possibly go the opposite direction, he will feel the tention and hurry back so it doesn't break.

If he's pulling away, there's something going on. Why don't you ask him what is bothering him? Is he seeing someone else? Is he wanting you to end the relationship? If he won't tell you, then perhaps you could tell him you'd like to cool it and not see him until (or if) he can discuss it with you honestly. If you don't have good communication, you really don't have anything worth keeping.

I am in the same situation. Men are like rubberbands, so I think you should give it two or three days of space to think about the relationship for yourself. If you still feel the same way, I would just focus on yourself and not worry too much about him.

Take time apart from each other. Give each other some space. If he loves you, he'll come back.
