Unfortunately in a world that promotes individualism, they leave the decision to be decent and courteous up to the individual. Most ppl know in their hearts what is right and wrong (even without being taught) and most ppl know rather or not they are being rude. Although, in some rare cases, rude ppl really just dont know they're being rude (usually due to upbringing or cultural differences)...Anyway....I dont think our standards have fallen...i dont know anyone who ENJOYS being disrespected. However, i do believe we have failed ourselves and each other by allowing a busy schedule or our worry of "what others think" to disrupt our normal maintenance of good values and decency.
Some ppl also use excuses to not be polite...."i've been hurt by so many already...im just gonna beat ppl to the punch and hurt them first or close them out so they cannot hurt me"....thoughts like that are prevailing high in America especially, now days. Ppl are becoming more and more bitter or closed off due to hurt feelings or worst yet, vengeful feelings from past experiences. Ppl of today, with their busy lives, find it quicker to close ppl out or hurt others to keep them away rather than spend a moment or two being kind. We've become quite synical, critical and "closed", especially to ppl we do not know.
Don't give up hope though...a lot of ppl still believe in manners and common courtesy...there are those that will be commonly corgeal and others that will go out of their way to make someone smile. But you gotta take the good with the bad and try not to let the bad effect how you respond, while teaching the next generation to not get bitter...get better.
keep the faith in humanity...there's still some good out here :0)

You're right. People's decency has been lowered. Coincidentally my mother and I were just talking about this earlier on today. If you look around you see women showing more skin than they need to and you see people showing disrespect to their fellow man. It is very unfortunate, but there isn't much that can be done I fear. Unless these people showing disrespect join the military...that might change them. But with some, I highly doubt it.
But not everyone has lost their decency. Some continue to maintain that, and their respect.

Good question, there are no respect nor common decency in people anymore. It is a sad thing because the way the world is turning right now, and honestly I feel people need to get together no matter what race, creed or religions they are and make this a better place.

Heather, you're precisely suitable! in case you have ever heard it went down the tube? i'd would desire to declare that television has helped emmensely to smash straightforward decency. permit me quote an artlicle from the Reader's Digest: that's no longer an attraction for prudery, yet for prudence. the US has problems with drugs, extreme-college intercourse, AIDS and rape. None of those will pass away till human beings in positions of duty come forward and clarify, in frankly ethical words, that the countless issues human beings do in recent times are incorrect. i think of invoice Clinton getting "sucked off" in the white residing house and then mendacity approximately it earlier the completed us of a had a unstable impression on the little ones of that era. It became a countrywide calamity on a international scale.

You're right and it's sad.
A little bit of courtesy and decency would make our world a better place to live.
I do have to say some people are still raising their children the right way and good for them.

It is not you. I think it is because people have quit disciplining their kids. I was at the store with my mom the other day and say a woman being called everything but a child of God by her child & I don't think the little angel was more that 4 or 5 years old. The mom saw us and said how cute is she? She got angry because I told her that I didn't think it was cute at all. Too many people want to friends with their children and not set boundaries.

I agree with you. Seems the standards are at an all time low. It';s as if people just dont care or want to be polite anymore. Just to easy, to insult than to offer a nice word or hand. There are still some out there, but they seem to be few.

Yet we are even more PC than ever. But nobody sees the correlation between the two. The less PC the more manners and common courtesy, the more PC the less manners and common courtesy.

1. Perhaps there should be a class in etiquette in the grade and high schools. Then certain etiquettes can be explained to those who don't understand them.
2. Judith Martin — Miss Manners covers everything — even email etiquette.

I don't think standards are lower - people are just lazy and in a rush all the time! I've noticed my friends are teaching their kids excellent manners now, so you're not the only one noticing.
