it is o.k and they use the part where Abraham lies about Sarah being his sister and not his wife. They say if the ends justifies the means it is ok. So does that mean they can tell lies to get people to join their Temple because then they would have just means?

No, we do not advocate lieing. We do not lie to "get people to" join the church or do anything else.
While there are several instances in the scriptures where people lied, that doesn't mean that we think it's ok to lie -regardless of the outcome. There is only one exception, and I think it's an exception that any Christian would agree with. If God tells you to do something, you do it, even if it means doing something you know to be wrong. But God R A R E L Y tells people to do such things. Case in point, Abraham lieing about Sarah being his sister, Abraham preparing to kill his son, Nephi killing Laban (Book of Mormon story). The reason this rarely happens (in my opinion) is because Satan can imitate and fool man into thinking his message is God's message and it can be difficult to distinguish between the two for a lot of people. Maybe this is what your friend was trying to explain when he/she told you it was ok to lie. It's not OK, unless God tells you to - and even then it would be EXTREMELY rare for God to do this. --IMHO.

You must have had one crazy and misinformed Mormon tell you that, because it is contrary to the Mormon faith to lie, just as I'm sure it is most (see 10 commandments and Mormon Articles of Faith). Sorry you have to hear such bogus stuff. The whole "ends justifying the means" thing is more of a worldly view, not the Mormon faith. Good luck, and hopefully you can get the truth.

Couple things...1) God "can" tell you to lie about something. He's told people to kill other people, so I suppose the lying thing wouldn't be out of the question either. 2) This guy that told you this is not perfect. I'm sure he's telling you what he believes is right, that doesn't make it Mormon doctrine, anymore then if i said the sun revolves around the earth it would become a new astronomical law.
You can't judge a religion by one person's opinons. I am a Mormon and i've never heard of such a thing before. Then again maybe I'm just lying to you! LOL. Peace

Lying is dishonest, and though the Bible isn't explicit regarding Abraham's journey into Canaan, the Pearl of Great Price is.

In Abraham 2: 22-24, it says in part, " . . . the Lord said unto me (Abraham): Behold, Sarai, thy wife, is a very fair woman to look upon;
Therefore it shall come to pass, when the Egyptians shall see her, they will say--She is his wife; and they will kill you, but they will save her alive; therefore see that ye do on this wise:
Let her say unto the Egyptians, she is thy sister, and thy soul shall live."

What the Lord told Abraham to do is one thing; anyone telling others lies "to get them to join their Temple" does not wash and is baseless.

If a Mormon told you that it is all right to lie because the end justifies the means I say it is wrong. I know nothing of this Mormon of whom you speak so I can't make any further judgment.

Perhaps this fellow was thinking of the scripture I just quoted.

the Bible is a very weak argument but ones own common sense can arrive at the same conclusion if we notice that in some instances homicide is justifiable so why not set a standard president for justifiable perjury....and the question becomes when does the end justify the means or vice versa.

Abraham was wrong and was punished for it too.
It is never OK to lie, even a "little white lie" is still a sin.

Who has ever told you it's ok to lie???
If the LORD told you to do something...like say your spouse wasn't for good reason, and HE knows everything...would you?
Mormons don't believe in lying.

I am Mormon and I have been taught to NEVER lie. It is never okay to lie. Like the 10 commandments, THOU SHALT NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS. I believe this person was saying what he was taught in his home, not by the church doctrines.

For life or death situations, like the King who wanted to kill just-born Jewish babies, it's o.k., because killing would be against God's will. To lie for your own personal profit, N.F.G.!
