I speak English as my mother tongue, and then am fluent also in American Sign and in Swedish. I can get by in Norwegian and Danish, of course, because I do speak Swedish, but still need a phrasebook to tackle Finnish. I can speak a little German -- enough to go shopping and such -- and learned a little Dutch, too, but have probably forgotten most of it. I know pathetically little French and some Spanish.
I know that sounds like a lot to some of my fellow Americans, but it really isn't by global standards. Being able to speak 4 languages fluently could get you a job as a department store clerk in some large European cities! It's normal for most of the world's inhabitants to speak 2 or 3 languages, at least.

Unfortunately I do not speak any foreign languages. I can speak a little Spanish, maybe a few words in Yiddish. It's a shame that the US doesn't make it mandatory for a foreign language to be learned in school. As America is a big world power it is not the only one and English is not necessarily universal.

I took 3 years of Spanish in high school, 4 quarters of Latin in college, can transliterate Greek (pronounce Greek words out loud even though I don't necessarily know what they mean), have studied Hebrew on my own (got to chapter 45 in a 1960's Hebrew text for high-schoolers before I started spinning my wheels), and my brother taught me how to cuss in German. The only problem with cussing in German is that German cuss words sound a lot like the cognate English words.
Occasionally, I speak English too. :-)
