A thoroughbred horse has an average lifespan of about 25-30 years so as Desert Orchid fits nicely into that age group, you could safely call him average. Given that the average man (in the UK) lives 75 years it's probably fair to say in human years, he was approximately that age too.

I understood that Dessie was the equivalent to about 80 in human years - that's certainly what a lot of the press are saying.
27 is a very good age for a racehorse, very few live beyond 30.

How long does a horse live and what is the conversion factor for horse years to human years? At a recent British Equine Veterinary Association meeting, it was reported that the average horse lives 28 + 5 years and the conversion factor of 2.2 should be used to compare a horse's age to human years. The 45-year-old pony named Tawney, which was living in Thorold, Ontario (Canada) in 1999, was equivalent to a 99-year-old person.
