i want to try to make a collage painting of all the things that inspire me by using different mediums (newspaper, cloth, metal, etc), but i dont know what will be a better choice oil of acrylic...Im exploring and i dont want to spend a lot of money on something i wish i knew more about. I would be painting on canvas.

What are you painting? acryllic paints are good for ceramics, bisque and greenware but oils are better for portraits. I usually work with acrylics and they do well on fabric and paper but not well on metal and i'm pretty sure oils do better on canvas. Sorry, but I hope that helps.

The drawback to oils is also a benefit, they remain wet for a long period (and workable)...takes a long time for them to dry completely to a non-smearable setup. Acrylics dry in a relatively short amount of time. Then you have to paint over them in order to correct mistakes, oils you can wipe and scrape and play with. You should try both on small canvases to get the feel. They also mix differently and sheen differently. Oils are more expensive - but I have found them in second hand stores (acrylics also). Just check carefully that they are not dried up hard in their tubes and that the tubes are not cracked or leaking. I use house paint from Home Depot or Lowe's for collages, it works fine. Cheap too, especially if you buy Oops! paint or mixing mistakes at the paint counter. Good cheap practice paint or whatever...hey, one of my artist friends puts his in all his exhibitions!

since you want to save money I would recommend the acrylics...you can get good and messy w/them...and as for the collage idea..the paint straight out of the tube has a nice viscosity that will help it stick things together...sounds like a great project...have fun

Do you like to get messy, or do you like to take your time? I prefer oils, because they dry slower so I have more time to perfect and have fun with my painting. With acryllics I feel rushed, since I'm too cheap to go out and by the slower-drying medium.

if you are new in painting's go for oil because if any mistakes arise you can correct easily. in acrylic paintings you can not correct but put some more paintings over there.I prefer oil paintings it takes more time to dry you can learn easily.all the best

Depends.. if you are painting frequently you would probably want acrylic both for health and cost reasons.

I would go with Acrylic. It's easier to use, drys faster (or at all) and doesn't require solvents to clean up.

Good luck!
