Our chihuahua was spayed when her pups were 3 hours old which is basically a total hysterectomy, so if she doesn't have her female hormones how can she continue to produce milk?

If she still has the pups nursing her body will produce milk. doesn't matter whether she is spayed or not. Her body responds to the need for milk. If a human would get a hysterectomy after giving birth we would still make milk for the baby as long as the baby is fed that way.

She had already started lactating(making milk) before the pups were born. Her body will continue to make milk as long as the pups are nursing. I have had dogs in the same situation, c-section & spay and then nursed pups just fine.

How old are the puppies. When my last dog was nuetered he cont to display habits, when I asked the vet said it would take a few weeks for the hormones to be completely out of his system.

yes she will be able to feed her babies as the hormones had "kicked in"just be careful that the pups don't catch her stitches and allow her "time out"from them if she needs it.she does need some rest it was a Major operation she had but in my experience Mum won't want to leave them even to go to the toilet awww bless.
