If yo purchased it in Mass they will charge you a 5% sales tax and will send you a bill for the excise fee. I never heard of a temp plate in Mass. If NY has them that is where you need to get them from.

Bring in your insurance paperwork and registration to the Dept of Motor vehicle to the state where you want it registered. Your must have the insurance from the state where you want to register the car. They will give you a temporary tag for 30-60 days until the new paperwork comes back from the state where you are going to be garaging that vehicle. If your tag is up in 30 days and the paperwork is not ready then they will give you another temporary tag for another 30 days.
