Because schools are under-funded! In reality they are well-funded but the money goes to the top first just like everywhere else. I was in senior high school from 87-90 and played football, baseball, and golf. It cost me and my parents 1-5% of what it would cost now, the only thing I had buy on my own was golf clubs($50 used Wilson club set) and shoes for each sport, now you must provide everything in most school related activities, even fees just to join. I have found hockey to be the worst for sports, and I imagine there would be alot more saxophone players today if a student could play any instrument he/she wished without having to worry about how much it cost.

They must pay to play because Americans don't want to pay higher taxes. Remember? It used to be that band, choir and extra curricular activities like driver's ed. and football were all paid for out of your school milage or property taxes.
Our founding fathers thought that to make it so that even the lowliest of farmers could hold public office, they needed to be paid a small stipend. Public office required time away from home and if they didn't get paid, then only the wealthy could aford to hold such office. It was all about representation. So, how much do our elcted representatives get paid now? Ted Kennedy? Hillary Clinton? GW Bush? They nolonger represent the lower or true middle class Americans. Even your local officials get far more than the average American they represent. With pay checks like theirs, it's no wonder you have career politicians and crumbling schools. Even our school superintendent here collects well over $200,000 a year.

Because Bush and the Republicans have taken away so much funding for state governments that they cannot afford to provide these activities for free. Same reason that many schools have PE only once or twice a week, have had to cut art classes and almost all other activities other than basic education.
In response to Doc, do you truly believe that Ted Kennedy of all people really holds his office for the little bit of money they pay him to be senator, with all the money his family has. Govt officials are grossly underpaid in comparison to private indust. The pres of the US makes less than the CEO of a very small company. The Rep have to cut funding to the states to afford the huge tax cuts for the wealthy and to pay for their disgusting war, not to pay their own salaries.
