Yup it is... strange isn't it... you mean menstruation and shellfish are abominations? Come on....

Well if you detach yourself from the religious unwavering obedience you'd see the reason behind most of the old testaments laws...

Do remember that medical science in those times were not as advances as it is today, and people of that time have no / little understanding of bacteria growth, cholesterol levels, etc.

Imagine if God told Moses, "thou shall get your women during menstruation to wear santitary napkins, else it could give rise to bacteria growth, infections, and yeast growth, causing undue harm, and could event result in toxin poisoning...", or "thou shall not eat too much shellfish, lest your rising cholesterol levels increasing your chance at a cardiac arrest, and possible kidney failure, and high blood pressure, which itself could lead to a stroke..." Man you'd get once bunch of people that would go "Huh?"

And as medical science progress, you'd see the rational of God's commandments, much the same with the whole of Leviticus particularly Lev 11. Quote Lev 11:12 "Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters that [shall be] an abomination unto you." If we look at the instructions and we'd see that only fishes are allowed (most fish anyway), cause medical science have even advocated the importance of fish in a healthy (non-vegetarian diet) due to the high proteins, as well as Omega 3 fats.

Which of course begs the question "why not tell the people to not eat too much instead of don't eat?" Which of course invites me to ask you to recall your childhood days, or now if you have kids / younger siblings (really young, say <4 years of age). If you tell them eat in moderation, you'd get a kid that goes 1 tub of ice cream is in moderation, with an attached pitiful looking face...

And if you take a look at that, and as medical science semi improve during the Roman empire days, Act 10:10 - 15. You'd see God given a clear instruction to Peter to eat all manner of food, birds of the air, beast of the fields, and of course shellfish too. As the people have settled down, and start planting all sorts of vegetables and fruits, coupled with wine. The healthier living would then permits richer foods...

My two cents worth!

Well, the "Old Testaments" are usually referred to as the "Old Testament."

And God didn't write it. Many men wrote it over a period of milennia. Some of those men writing it had little or no understanding of much of anything. Same as you for instance, when you imply the Old Testament says menstruation is an abomination. The Old Testament says that NO PLACE. So you see, you are in the same class as the authors of the Old Testament. Be proud, and remember, you are unique, just like everybody else on the planet.

Shellfish helps clean the ocean by filtering the dirts as their foods They are compared to scavengers that thrives on garbage. It is not an abomination as if it is dangerous to their spirit but to the Jewish tribes as unhealthy source of food. Sometimes religion has to inject some spiritual tones to make people follow while there is still the absence of scientific medical cure.
Woman menstruations is a periodical thing that happen to every woman in their adult developments. Since it oozes frequently and unexpectedly most of the time in temple ceremonies, People must have experienced a lot of disturbances or nuisances during the rituals. To control that, then one of the ways must be to ban their entry to the temples and prayer gatherings by telling them they are at the moment of their impurities.
During the times when no medical doctors or scientific explanations available to many common occurences that we find today, pagans and religious has to sort supernatural belief.

Yes, the Old Testament is of God. Menstruation? Never heard that one. Shellfish? I'm guessing it had to do with how extremely dangerous it is to eat improperly prepared Shellfish. Ever see someone get food poisoning from undercooked Lobster? Believe you me, it is NOT pretty.
