Wines from Chile are pretty good and reasonably priced. I was told this years ago by a guy I was dating. Since I'm not great at picking out wine and I can't afford much, whenever I buy wine for a special meal I prepare for my current bf and I, I always buy a wine from Chile and so far by bf (who has a better sense of wine) has always said it was good.

When I have wine and cheese (romantic night) I have about 4 different kinds of crackers. The cheeses I buy for it are Swiss, Havarti, Brie and Gouda.

I buy my wine at the liquor store (we don't have alcohol anywhere's else) and my cheeses at the grocery store.

In addition to crackers and cheese I also have smoked oysters/muscles and a shrimp ring for romantic night. But since you are giving the wine away I guess this is irrelevent.

Americans frequently confuse the name of the type of grape with the name of the wine; the wine should have a domaine name if it is really good. If you want a good wine then forget Cabernet Sauvignon and:

Get some good Australian inexpensive reds are: Tyrells Long Flat Red (not expensive at all tastes great), Black Opal,

Here is a list you can use for your gifting

Any Napa/Sonoma region Cabernet should do...there's a deli called the Genova delicatessen: http://www.napavalleysearch.com/food/markets-delis/genova_delicatessen.html

they've got some awesome stuff...if your not near there...go to a local deli...but use a neighborhood deli...by the looks of this mortadella I got from Raleys, it seems the supermarket deli's are selling the cheap stuff now :(

Trader Joes has great wines for a little to a lot of money. I don't know if you have one in your town, but I sure that you can order from them online and see there selection.

There's billions of them.
Try something a little more unusual.
Like a Medoc. Much more interesting and a better pedigree
