I have a very strange accent I don't even know how I got it! People could understand me when I speak. However, they tell me that I have one. I'm not an ESL, I'm just wondering how I could get rid of it. I recorded my voice and listen to it...man I sound annonying. At least that's what I think.

Thank you for taking the time to answer.

Go to a speech-language pathologist and see if they can help you with accent reduction. If it came out of nowhere, I would get it checked out because that is very unusual to have an accent just pop out of nowhere.

So you are talking about having a different accent in your native language?

Is your accent different from people who come from the same place you come from?

I agree that a speech pathologist can probably help you.

Start listening to books on tape. When you find a reader whose accent you admire, obtain a number of books on tape read by that reader and listen to them over and over until you have memorized way too much of the text. By then, you will have absorbed some of the nuances of the reader's speech and perhaps will start imitating him or her unconsciously.

Everyone has an accent.....people that have been around you a while or live near you are usually used to hearing it....and your accent will change...you will see how friends talk and become accustomed to it....eventually you'll talk almost exactly like them.
