My one cat licks me on the hand and sometimes the forehead, nose, or even my lips. What is she trying to say?

Your cat is simply trying to tell you that you are accepted by her. Cats love to lick their humans as acceptance into their den and let you know that they love their human. She may from time to time do it to reassure herself that you are there and what you "taste" like to her, cats are very teritorial and want to make sure everything and everyone are in their place. Consider yourself loved and snuggle with her when she does this, she may just need some reassuring herself!

So many nice answers--yes, she's telling you she loves you. This is a very high compliment! & it tells you she knows you love her, too. I liked T-Bird's the best--but many deserved thumbs up (which I gave!) The salt, or oils thing on your skin does NOT cut it! (I think someone pointed this out...) Many assumptions are made about the behaviour of cats that "seem" so pragmatic, & it's only because those people don't realize how truly, incredibly intelligent cats are, & how loving. I had an "incident" that pretty much immobilzed me for awhile, & my kitty snuggled up under my chin, giving me little licks & gentle nibbles, & NEVER left my side except to eat & use the kitty box. Explain THAT one. Cats KNOW even when you're "hurting" on the inside, & will do everything they know to comfort you. I had the greatest prince of a cat who "groomed" my hair, (also licked, more like little kisses) & the "grooming" was an act of love, too. Be sure & read what T-Bird says. She does love you and thinks you are part kitty. My one cat pushes her teeth into my forehead and then licks my hair. My other cat gives me love bites (sometimes a little too hard on the hand, chin, nose, whatever is there for her to grab) and drools when she is extemely happy and content.

It's hard to say...some people would say that the cat is simply grooming you, like she'd groom herself or her kittens. But I've also heard other things, like the licking represents how the cat feels about you. Perhaps he's grooming you because she cares about you, similar to the way she'd feel about kittens or other friendly cats (remember, cats just think of you as another big cat). It can remind her of her kittenhood, when she had her face snuggled next to her mommy, and now that you're her new mommy, she loves you just as much. So perhaps it's just the little bugger telling you "I love you, mom! Thanks for feeding me!"

Many people say they're just licking salt from your skin, but we've spilled plenty of salt around here and our cats never try to clean it up for us (but spill some chicken and see how fast it disappears, lol!)
