Sorry to say but the safest dog with an 8 week old baby is a stuffed one.

Wait until your 8 week old sister is a couple of years old and then start looking.

Figure out how much time you can spend grooming, training and playing with the dog each week. Estimate how much space you have for the dog and how much you can spend each week, month, year on it.

Once you and your folks have figured out the above, talk to a pet education person at your local humane society or shelter and they can help steer you.

If you want an adult, they can help you find one, or go to www.petfinder.com to find a great rescue group near you.

If you want a puppy, get this book FIRST: Before & After Getting Your Puppy: The Positive Approach to Raising a Happy, Healthy & Well-Behaved Dog by Ian Dunbar.

If you find a breed you like, go to the akc site and find the breed club for that breed. (www.akc.org).

IMPORTANT: Go to the breed club's page on the web and read about the breed paying CLOSE attention to what they state is their "breeder's code of ethics" and what health tests should be done on the breed.

IF you find someone who breeds pups who is violating the code of ethics---walk away. For example, one person here suggested you get a pup at 5 weeks. It is cruel, wrong and potentially damaging to the pup and illegal in some places to sell a pup that young.

Best of luck.

First of all, I would not get a puppy at this time. They are very active, do not understand babies and need attention themselves. If you adopt an older dog, you may not know its history and background. If it is not used to children, there can be a problem. Also, they too are getting used to a new environment. I was told the best breeds for young children are Golden Labs and Retrievers. But, you should get the dog at a young age so it is used to the baby. But, you should wait until your new sister is at least two years old so she and the puppy can get used to each other and understand each other a little.

I would not get a dog of any kind while the baby is so small. A household with a baby is stressful enough. Then to add a puppy on top of that, the stress levels go thru the roof. I think you should wait a couple of years before getting a dog. And any kind of dog can bite, even one of the gentler breeds. There can be bad dogs in any breed, it depends on genetics and how the dog is raised.

coming from a dog lover and the way u put the question there is no safe breed of dog. it is what we do to and how we treat our dog(s) is what make them safe.

they all have teeth so they are all capable of biting. my sister-in-law breeds rottweiler's and she has some what would appear to be killers on her hand but they are gentle and will eat out of the same dish as cats because that is the environment her and her husband create for them. on the other hand my father-in-law has mini pinchers and i have been attacked by them 3 times.

really it is how u raise that dog. u have to take into consideration what kind of dog u want to have and do reasearch/consult with a certified breeder if that particular dog is good to be around kids or the environment ur going to expose them to. everyone make pits, rotty's, mastiff's , chows and u name it on the front burner for dangerous unsafe dogs but u have to take into consideration were they around kids, did they have them on a chain wich is actually a form a torture for a dog to be on a chain cause when we take them off they have all of the pinned up energy wich could end in someone being mauled to death. last year in santa rosa,ca there was a 3 month infant who was killed by the parents datsun or in florida where the pomeranian killed the baby a few days after the newborn was bought home from the hospital.

the bottom line is the research we do and the little time to find out about the dogs we consider to bring into our household. we bring dogs home and introduce them to our famililies and right off the bat start treating them like they are one of our kids which is all good but we soon forget they are not children. they are still dogs and that is where we go wrong

Hi...

There are no "safe" breeds out there. It is all up to the owner to train his or her dog to be "safe". If you want a good family dog, get a Boxer. They are very loyal, playful and loving. But since you have a new baby in the home...i would not recommend you get a dog just yet. Young children and dogs don't mix. Dogs with young children view the children as their pack mates. Young children do not have the ability to assess themselves as a pack leader. I would recommend you wait until your child (sister) is older before getting a dog.

Just my opinion...take it or leave it!!! My vote is for the Boxer if and when you decide on the pup you want!

Remember: Exersize, Discipline then affection....as per The Dog Whisperer!

It has a lot to do with how they are trained/treated. Labradors are very gentle, though. Generally speaking, they are not at all aggressive. Breeders even tell you not to count on them to be good guard dogs. They bark some, but they don't bite much. They need to know who is in charge, and you should keep ALL small children above them physically - meaning keep the child's head above the dog's head at all times. That helps them to perceive that the child is 'superior' in the family 'pack' - dogs are 'pack' animals.

One with no teeth or claws...joking. All dogs have the potential to bite and scratch. It depends on you, labs are good dogs but have lots of energy and need to be walked daily...that is true for most dogs. I would say go to the AKC site and research different breeds. Good luck.

None. But if you must, I like weiner dogs. My brother has a long haired mini, and it is good with little kids. They can get yippy if you let them but in my experience(brother:1 extended family:3) it is a smart breed. Also it's easy to control thier movement.

Just keep the dog and the sister seperated untill the dog is older and the sister is less fragile.

id say the big poodle because for one thing, they are the friendliest dog around, and they are very tollerantable. for another thing, i asked vets and they all said poodle. even I like big poodles. i had a beagle/boston terror mix, and it barked at people who walked pass the lawn, but not in. (i don't know why so don't ask!)
he barked at me when i went out of the yard but when i went in the yard he stopped. we had a friend named hunter who tufty (name of dog) barked at but got used to in only 9 days. same with people who lived in the neighborhood. so i guess dogs adapt to the surroundings and people in the area. p[oodles don't have to do that. so poodles are the safest,
