A nice lab mix or pure lab even a golden retreiver would be nice for smaller children ...if size is a issue you cant go wrong with a Basset Hound.

Stay away from the shepherds. They can turn suddenly aggressive, not only against your children but also other kids who come to visit. Labs are great with kids. We have 5 year old twin nephews, and our 8 month old lab puppy lets them crawl all over him. I've never seen an easier going dog. Labs are very dependent on you, however, AND need lots and lots of exercise. They will follow you everywhere, and do not like spending long periods of time alone. Good luck!

shepards are great family dogs and they have a natural sense of protection for family. good choice. I would also recommend a a Boxer or a golden retriever. Bear in mind that the larger a dog the shorter the life expectancy, plus larger dogs can have hip issues and of course larger vet and feed bills. Big dogs take rough and tumble childhoods a bit better. I loved my big dogs when I was a kid, and my daughter loved her boxer. Research the breed temperment of nay dog you get, check the local shelter or rescue agencies. please do not buy a dog from the pet store, they over charge and you dont know the history of the animal, always go to a reputible breeder.
blessings.

My sister knows a couple who run a dog kennel; their recommendation is a black lab. Labs are gentle and patient with small kids (they will put up with persistent pestering and tail-pulling from children ...). I'd agree that a German Shepherd may not be your best choice (I think this breed might get a little too agressive and either scare or harm your kids).

Don't get a small dog, they are very easily threatened and will most likely bite your children. Bloodhounds are probably the best dogs for kids (or cats) because they are sooooo laid back. Beagles are also good with kids. Labs are good pets, but can be a bit excitable and are also very strong, so they might accidentaly knock one of your children down. I provided a link to the American Kennel Club breed profiles, look through them and do your research before making a decision
Have fun with your new puppy!

I have a 2 year old and a six year old. I bought a full blooded chow. She is great with both kids. As a puppy she was big enough where my kids didnt hurt her and now she is 10 months old and she is still good. Not good with strangers, great guard dog and pack dog. She will be a great companion for both ages. Also super easy to train. I had mine trained within two weeks.

We had a german shepherd collie mix when i was growing up. She was 4 when I was born but even when my brothers and I were little my mom never thought twice about leaving us in the yard with her. She was very gentle with us but no one could have gotten near us if she didn't know them. I have never seen a better dog. She was so patient with kids. Our cats would even had their kittens in her pen. I thought my parents had just gotten lucky and found a dog with a great personality but my fiances mom told be she had a shepherd/collie when she was younger and it was the best dog she had ever seen.

all dogs have the potental to be a great dog but i would suggest a medium size dog. as some the bigger more powerful breed may accidently bump a child etc. but a small breed in MY experince are short tempered and snappy, and im not saying all just some that i have met in the past have been. its really about training the dog and i guess in a way the kids to so they have an understaning on how to treat this dog.

I researched this quesiton before, and surprisingly came up with Greyhounds and whippets as the most gentlest and reliable around children. Probably NOT the answer you want, it's easier to say a Lab of some sort.
Google greyhounds and children.
Also, many perfectly kind and affectionate grey hounds get put down because they can no longer race anymore. Adopt if you can! With any breed.

it all depends on what size dog you are considering,if your after a small breed you cant go past a cavalier king charles spaniel there a great dog or on the larger size breed golden retrievers or labs are great, please keep in mind ,any dog of any breed has the potential to bite,do as much research as you can when you decide the breed of choice and be sure to check out the temprement of both parents where possible
