There are lots of well-adjusted goths out there. There are also a lot of messed up goths. But you know what? The same could be said of any group of people.
Personally, I've met both kinds. The more positive ones are intelligent, deep, independent, and surprisingly positive.
There are negative goths, usually teenagers who are naturally emotional anyway. They use goth to add a dramatic touch to their self-destructive and antisocial behavior. If you find yourself heading down this path, please seek help from someone.
For the record, I'm a happily married professional computer programmer who runs on online goth business on the side. Being goth wont ruin your life. But that's not to say goths don't ruin their lives. The important thing is to reflect on yourself, your attitudes, and continually take stock of where you are in life. Then again, that's good advice in general, no matter who you are.

Here, show them this.
Goth is more a lifestyle or outlook on life than anything. They tend to accept that there are bad things as well as good things in life, rather than 'sweep them under the rug', to say, and pretend they don't exist. They can dress however they want, although many prefer darker colors and more dramatic clothes and makeup, and listen to lots of songs and varied genres of music, which can include but are by no means limited to, new wave, darkwave, ethereal, Celtic, goth rock, punk, postpunk, chants, heavy metal, industrial, Latin, et cetera. Not all are interested in vampires - in fact, relatively few are. Many if not most have good relationships with their parents. Very few have mental or psychological problems. Most are actually quite nice, if a bit saturnine. Very, very, very few are 'satanists' or 'devil worsippers'. Most of the young teenagers who listen to Marilyn Manson, Disturbed, Slipknot, Korn, My Chemical Romance, Drowning Pool, et cetera and wear heavy thick makeup and studded spike collars and bracelets are called 'Mall goths', shop mostly at Hot Topic, and - this is important - they're not real goths. They just seem to think they are. They act disturbed and surly and try to impress/intimidate people. It seldom works, as most are obviously pathetic, and almost all will (thankfully) grow out of it. If you'd like a comprehensive explanation, try visiting goth.net. Some songs that goths might listen to:
Dragonfly (Conjure one mix) - Cruxshadows
Dazzle - Siouxsie and the Banshees
The Passion of Lovers - Bauhaus
Lucretia My Reflection - Sisters Of Mercy
Lullaby - The Cure
She's Lost Control - Joy Division
In Our Angelhood - The Cocteau Twins
Funeral Night - Bella Morte
Deliverance - The Mission UK
Cemetary Gates - The Smiths
Are 'Friends' Electric? - Tubeway Army
Love Is Stronger than Death - The The
Nowhere Girl - B-Movie
Twilight Of The Mortal - Killing Joke
Seconds - The Human League
Indigo Eyes - Peter Murphy
Right Now - The Creatures
Walk on the Moon - Daniel Ash
No Big Deal - Love and Rockets
Fire Woman - The Cult

OK, just calm down, you are going to be fine. First off, if you are a happier person hanging out with a new crowd of people and your "friends" are getting all jealous and telling you crazy things, then those people are not your friends.
Being a goth is fine. There's nothing wrong with it if it is what makes you feel like a compete person. I'm an older or "elder" goth, and I don't worship Satan, kill kittens or think about death or cutting my wrist. I don't hate the world and try to scare kids by wearing black lipstick to the mall. I'm married with a little boy in kindergarten. I even do work for his teacher from time to time! I love to write, do photography, read, listen to music, talk to my friends, go to museums and have family outings with my husband and son. Is my life a wreak? Am I ruined because I dye my hair blue-black and wear black clothes? NO!! A happy goth here!
So, you go tell those friends of yours that just because you feel like hanging out with some new people does not change who you are on the inside. Branching out into this world makes you a well-rounded person, and I can promise you that you will be better for it. Seeing the world from a different point of view makes it all worth while.

You're not ruining your life by becoming anything, especially not if it's helping you to become a more well adjusted adult. I was right where you are once. I eventually snapped out of the depression (anyone who tells you highschool is the best time in your life is a big fat freaking liar) but the look, the aesthetic, the music, and the balanced outlook on life stayed with me.
Your friends just probably don't know what to make of you, and are too afraid to be different themselves. A lot of people fear change. Anyway for a better perspective on things, I think this site is good for a chuckle, although she really does have some good advice for people your age.

being goth wont ruin your life. your friends are just being judgemental and they are probably just scared that they'll lose you, like you'll choose to be friends with the goths instead of them.
so just try to help them understand that you will still be friends with them even though you go goth, and that you want to be friends with the goths as well as friends with them. that being goth wont effect your friendship on your part. that you want to be able to express yourself for who you are just as they have the right to do same thing.
Hope this helps.

I graduated high school and I'm in my 3rd year of college. Dressing goth didn't ruin my life, and I doubt it'll ruin yours. It's just letting your outside represent how you feel on the inside.

Just like everyone Else you are going through a phase. I did it. You will do it regardless of what I say. So do it and get it out of your system.
It's something that you learn from and as far as I am concerned, as long as you don't get into self mutilation, do whatever you would like.
