It's probably based on real events, but puts these events down to divine intervention rather than natural disasters or illusions or hallucinations etc.

It's hard to understand why some people feel offended by your question, the same thing happened when I posted evidence that jesus was a black homosexual jewish prostitute- it was removed from yahoo answers on the grounds that jews racist beliefs were offended by the insinuation that such a thing as a black jew existed, christians were not too happy either, and all the whores complained that since he was a man the correct term was "rentboy" and calling him a prostitute insulted thier profession.

Firstly, the Bible was not written decades after Jesus died (at least, not the whole thing). Parts of the Bible were written by people who lived with Jesus and experienced first hand the events we read in the Bible (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John). The Bible is composed of many books, most all written by different men. Some books are personal letters (most of the New Testament), some are bits of a journal of sorts (Psalms). The more I think on it, the more I disagree that the Bible is just hearsay.

am not sure i'd say it's hearsay (especially looking at the new testament) but as with all documents it needs to be looked at in context taking into account the biases of those who wrote the books orginally, the translators, those who copied it for others (bare in mind any surviving ancient scolls are NOT the originals and post date events by 100's of years) and the fact that the ultimate compilier of the bible as we know it ommited several books.

Historically they're accurate, but that proves very little.

As an aside, why is it that the Christian community on here are so prone to aggressive non-arguments? Surely you should be PMing people who ask questions like this in an evangelical outreach.. I'd have thought that the fact that people are interested enough to talk about the Bible demonstrates an openess to it?

If you read the Bible very carefully and study it, you will realise that it has to be divinely written because no human, or groups of humans, would have been able to write 66 different books with so many allegories, types, etc interwoven into them without divine inspiration.

Also, it is human nature to wish to be believed. Therefore, had the Bible been the writings of men themselves rather than of God through men, it would have been written less grandiose. The reason that the Bible is so credible is because nobody would have concocted a story like that.

Then there is the fact that many of the early Christians (included those who wrote the Bible through divine inspiration) were persecuted and lots of them were martyred. If it were not true, why would they have persisted in the face of death?

Gospel of Luke/Acts were researched for a man identified asTheophilus. Gospel of John was an eye-witness report. The letters were written or dictated by Paul and the Apostles. Nobody knows who wrote Hebrews. The epistles were written to churches that had problems. If you read them, you would realise no-one would put that stuff in if it ws made-up. 1 Corinthians discusses what to do with a man that sleeps with his fathers wife. Galatians and Colossians are about churches where people are replacing grace with legalism, saying you can't be a Christian unless you obey a whole raft of laws. Have a read of Galatians, Paul really slags them off! If I was writing my own Bible, I would not have included them.

Well... "The Bible includes legal texts, history, poetry, philosophy, music, personal correspondence (letters), and prophesies." Since it's been printed mechanically, "it's been translated into more languages and sold more copies than any other book in history. Recent statistics indicate that well over 150,000 new Bibles are sold or given away EACH DAY!" Moreover, seeing that some of it dates from roughly 3,500 years ago and is still here today (AND relevant) is worthy of note, to say the least.

Regarding Jesus...? Although I could write a book about Him, let me just say this: He prayed for the FORGIVENESS of His tormentors WHILE they were torturing Him to death. Is that not cause for pause and afterthought...?

Exodus 4:15 And thou shalt speak unto him, and put words in his mouth: and I will be with thy mouth, and with his mouth, and will teach you what ye shall do.

2 Peter 1:21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

Jesus authored as men wrote it out.
