I recently noticed that my puppy hates the dark! At night, when I take her out, I have to coax her out of the door into the dark. Once she is out, and done, she will shoot right back into this house.

I even had to move her crate into the living room (Where we keep a nightlight on) just so she wouldn't cry and bark everytime I turn off my TV.

So, is it possible that dogs could be afraid of the dark? If so, then how can I help her out with this problem?

Dogs have great night vision so its more likely that she doesn't want you out of the room.

Dogs have excellent night vision, (a trait crucial to their predatory ancestors). The minimum threshold of light dogs require for vision is about 5 to 6 times LOWER than that of humans. Unlike our eyes, a dog's eyes are designed to function well in low-light conditions. Although they in turn don't see color the same way we do, they're certainly not going to be stumbling around in the dark. That being said, if the dog has an unknown history or abuse involving being outside alone, nighttime..etc, then surely the dog could begin to associate such things with fear. Chances are, her dog simply does not want to be left outside alone at night. Dogs are social creatures. They have a natural instinct to want to be settled with their pack where they feel safe. Her assumptions are just anthropomorphism most likely because SHE'S scared of the dark. ;]

Yes, I think that is the problem with my dog. he's now 12 years old and in the past 5 years or so has developed a fear of fireworks (which he never had before) and now, just since this past halloween when he heard a fair amount of fireworks--I need to make sure that he gets outside to do his "business" before it gets dark out and he too darts back into the house immediately. He also has a "nightlight" it is the light above the stove. He was never like this before and I don't completely understand it but am really trying to help him deal with this fear. I guess we are all afraid of something whether we are willing to admit it or not.
Try taking your dog out with a flashlight.

I thought my neighbour's pitbull was afraid of the dark because it would alway start barking and whining as soon as it got dark. And when I turned on the light, it would stop. But it wasn't the dark, it was a family of racoons that would travel up our walkway. If the light was on, they would take another route. Pehaps, their are cats or other creatures that are coming out at night that your dog is afraid of.

Dogs are pack animals and prefer to be in their "cave" or safe place if they can't see if there's a danger present. It's all about keeping himself and his people safe.
