Right now I have a 42" Philips 720p Plasma TV. I'm buying another one and have heard about 1080p. I was wondering if there is a big visual difference between 1080p TV's and 720p TV's. Also if I use it for my games should I get an LCD or a Plasma?

Im also in the market for a new HDTV and 1080p was something in considered. From my research, all 720p TVs also display 1080i. Most of the information i found says unless youre a real videophile, there isnt enough difference between 1080i and 1080p, especially in screens smaller than 50". Its really only decernable on much larger screens. I will be very pleased to buy a 32" 720p LCD.

the other thing to look at is content available in 1080p. there are NO TV stations broadcasting in it. Right now only Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are even capable. You also need to make sure that your TV can accept a 1080p signal (not all 1080p claimed TVs can apparently).

For games, i hear now-a-days, it really doesnt matter, as long as youre not playing the same game for like 7 hours straight on a Plasma (the only one between the 2 with even a risk of burn-in). Also avoid heavy HSN watching :D

Currently, there are no shows that broadcast in 1080p. Even if you bought the TV, the picture would look the same when you are watching HDTV broadcasts. The advantage to a 1080p TV is that new technology like HD DVD and Blue Ray can be viewed in 1080p. The technology won't really take off for another couple of years, but you will be set up for the best possible picture. If you are connecting a computer to the TV and you have a good video card, you'll be able to notice a difference when you are playing games. Also, I think the PS3 might go up to 1080p, but I'm not 100% sure.

the best picture i have seen is a 1080p with a blue ray movie and blue ray DVD its incredible its the most like film, even with a 1080 i or 720 p signal running through them they up convert the source . there are movies being released every week in 1080p and they new Sony game system is 1080p jump on board. going from720p to 1080p you will be amazed, i sell TVs so i see this 8 hours aday i have sets 720p next to 1080p same company and picture source and the customer goes to the 1080p every time you can play games on plasmas most have game modes that have lower contrast and don't run as hot there aren't many 1080p plasmas yet but you will find them in DLP, L-COS and LCD.plasmas and LCD have half life's around 60000 hours that 7 hours aday for 18 years that along time playing the dlp and lcp projection and l-cos all have bulbs that last for5000-8000 hours before they burnout and need to be replaced at a cost of 200-300 bucks

1080p has a better resolution. To play video games get a lcd tv. In a plasma tv, the image will burn into your screen. The same will happen if you have a dvd player and use plasma. Plasma has the best picture, but isn't as durable, and it isn't advisable to play video games and to watch dvds on it. If you juat want to watch tv, get a plasma. If you want to play video games or something else, get an lcd.
