My son's in care four days a week. I checked several other centres and would not have put my son into them, even though they are different branches of the same company. The women where he is are of such a high calibre and I have always been very impressed with the care they take of the kids there; they really do make an extra effort and have helped my son with his small bout of separation anxiety to the best of their ability.

I'd like to show my appreciation with perhaps a small gift for x-mas, but I don't know what would be appropriate and I don't want to overstep the bounds. Do you have any suggestion? I did think a donation to a kids' charity in their names might be a good idea.

Thank you.

This is a good question, the same one that has been on my mind. Last year, I gave the caregivers scented candles and chocolate for Christmas. This year, I'd like to give them something for Thanksgiving as well. I plan to do some shopping tomorrow. I'd like to give them something different, not just something off the shelf that gives the appearance that I didn't put much thought into it.
I'm thinking about giving them lotion, perhaps an antibacterial kind with a fresh scent, if I can find one. They're always washing their hands and I know their hands can get really dry. I've been racking my brain and I can't think of anything else, so I'm interested to see what other types of answers you get.

I think a gift card would be really nice, that way they spend it however they want. They have the American Express gift cards in different increments and those can be used towards something else they may be saving up towards such as an Ipod or something more spendy. Along with that I would get them something such as candles or lotions or even a nice framed picture of your son

Casually ask where they like to eat or shop... a gift card to a place to eat, somewhere to shop, the body works shop... They are all great gifts, and the person can get exactly what they want. Believe me- teachers love gift cards! Another idea is a gift card for the movie rental place, a package of microwave popcorn, and some mugs for a comfy night relaxing on the couch. You could also get some "instruction" books about the age level of the kids in your child's class from the local book store. Teachers generally are interested in continually learning for their field, so even a gift card for a book store would be good, so that they could get books on working with children. Really, it is the thought that counts- and teachers who are doing a great job really want to hear it from the parents. A nice card with a heartfelt sentiment and a small gift are all that is needed. But, on behalf of teachers, thanks for thinking of the ones who take care of your child... it is usually a thankless job!

That sounds like a wonderful idea! Donating in their name couldn't possibly be seen as anything but a respectful and courteous thing to do.

I typically get stuffed coffee mugs (stuffed with single serve coffees, teas, candies, etc) for my daughter's teachers. You can find really cute mugs at the dollar store (so it is inexpensive even if giving several), then just stuff each one according to the teachers/caregivers liking and wrap in cellophane & a ribbon. It looks great, it's inexpensive, and it isn't something they'll feel guilty accepting. Either that, or work with your son to create a home-made gift. A wooden plaque with "thank you" and his hand prints, for instance. Something simple and inexpensive (expensive gifts can be misconstrued). But I think your charity idea is a great one too. :)

that is a nice idea but having worked in childcare i know these women do not make a lot of money they do it for their love of children some of my favorite presents I received were a coffee cup made at a paint your own pottery studio by a little girl it also had her hand prints on it,(i still have it) Christmas ornaments are nice and always a keepsake, a nice picture frame with your little sweetie in it, restaurant gift certificates are also nice.Chances are these ladies like you as much as you like them and any thing you do shows that you really care, and that is more important than anything.

I'm also very happy with the care my children receive from their caregivers. I like the antibacterial lotion gift idea. I might make a mini-basket for them with hand and nail care products in it. And I'll include a gift card that says something about their loving touch or the hands that care.
