If you was walking down the street and saw somebody hitting there head against a brick wall, hard enough so that they started bleeding, you would think that something was seriously wrong with that person - and you would be correct.

Cutting yourself is the same, it is self harm that is bought on by stress and the inability to cope and manage problems in a regular way.

It causes ugly scarring but its main point is that it hides psychological scarring, that needs to be bought into the open so that you can maximise the enjoyment that life has to offer.

...It is deliberately causing physical HARM to yourself. Still don't see it? Cutting does not solve your problems, it does not make you feel better. It is just a diversion from the pain you may have been feeling at the time, and just because you have found something else to focus on does not mean it will go away, there is 0 chance that it will. Then it keeps coming back and that's why you have been doing it for so long. Five years is a very long time to continually mutilate yourself, why haven't you ever sought help. I'm going to assume you are a teenager because the larger portion of people who cut are. Cutting in highschool began with some stupid emo trend. The scene kids do it and after that the posers follow, just for a scar to show that they have emotions and can be tough. The most popular cover up is "Oh, it's just a cat scratch."
Then there are those who cut because they don't know what else to do. You need to get help. You are hurting yourself, not self medicating.

Like some of the people who have already answered your question, cutting is bad because of the infections you could get, the scars, and eventually death. I think you know all this though. People who cut, cut because they DO care. They feel so much pain that they want to make themselves numb, or feel in control of something. You need to just stop before you end of killing yourself, because eventually that will happen if you continue this way. I hope this helps.

You obviously don't see it as being bad because you've been doing it for so long but for most of the population its a disturbing thing to do because its not natural to want to cut yourself.

I know you probably don't want to hear it but you should see a doctor or something because you could seriously hurt yourself one day.

Yes cutting is BAD! By cutting yourself, your brain begins to relate emotional pain to physical pain. The reason most people, especially teenage girls, cut is that they have trouble dealing with emotional hardship. However, most want help stopping. By just asking this question, you are questioning your behavior. If you can realize this, you can get help. There are several programs that help you stop cutting. It is difficult but there are always people willing to help you. But there are people who will always be there to help you. The first step is up to you, but there are many people willing to help if you allow them to. Talk to someone who you trust and they will most likely find a way to help you and help you help yourself.

Yes!!! Are you doing it because you feel bad?!!! I used to do it too when I was suffering from depresision and paranoia. I never had the realy courage to cut the vein but I would scratch myself with my nails or with a pencil in the bathroom. I know it doesn't seem serious but I've realized only now that it isn't the best way to solve your problems.

Cutting in society is not as bad as it used to... the only real health risks is if they get infected or if you cut a vain...or if you just cut your self to death.
But it not soething that people encorage... but its not something that we can so dont do it and you will stop... but you should diffently try alternatives...but if you see nothing wrong wtih it we can make you stop.

Any self harm is bad. A person usually does it to cover a deeper problem. You will regret how it looks when you are older and care more about yourself... no offense but you need professional counseling...good luck.
