I had my silver persian AVID microchipped for the sole reason that if she were ever lost or stolden I would be able to track her. September 2005 during a move from Peccole Ranch Las Vegas NV, My beloved Lucy wandered off and I never saw her again. She is exstemly friendly and would cuddle up to any one. I miss her so much. Anyway back to the microchip thing, after losing her I noticed that the veterinary hospitals/clinics, DO NOT scan your pet when they are taken in for check ups/shots/spay/neuter ect. Why have a system if it is not going to be utelized. The vet office people just assume that that is your pet and DO NOT scan them. I believe that I would have my lucy sitting in MY lap today and not the person how took her.

Her chip number is 044037628 if you picked up a stray purebred silver/grey persian from the Peccole Ranch area, take her to be chipped at any vet hospital near you.

Why have a system if the professionals that care for our animales DON"T USE IT

Some do use the system. My hospital scans all pets found stray or adopted from shelters and many shelters scan pets as well. Did you register your chip with AVID? If you did not send them a check and the registration form then there is no way for anyone to know that chip belongs to you and in fact anyone finding you cat can register it as their own. There is also the possibility that she is still living on the street somewhere as a stray. If you haven't already it might be a good idea to fax a picture, her chip number, a date and an address where she was last seen to all the local shelters, hospitals, and emergency facilities.

As a breeder, I use them mainly for identification, then as a way to help if a pet is lost. But that has always been the problem. Even if a vet scanns it for a person that stole it from you, the vet is not going to know it is stolen. Just the number comes up...no iformation. So unless the vet has the info that that number is a stolen animal.....no one will know. And no, they do not scan each pet that comes in for just anything.

Of course, the cat DID wander off, so assuming that someone stole her is wrong. There are so many things that can happen to a pet. Someone may have her that knows nothing about microchips!!!!!

The system is utilized, just not in the way you would like it.

My cat precious also wanderd off a few years ago when we were on vacation and she had gotten out of the hosue while we were gone. She was microchipped and had a collar that said her name and who to contact and etc. She had wanderd three towns away from my own and was picked up by the pound. She was scanned and returend to me (how happy i was) but then she had got out once more when we went up town a few weeks after that and went into the neighbors yard and she was shot........

All i want to say is try everything you can to find your cat. Did you call the local humane places or the pounds? Try calling even around your town or people that live a few miles away from you. Put an add in the newspapper and so on. I hope you have luck finidng Lucy.

Some vets do scan but others dont because they feel that they dont need to. They think they are you cat because you brought them in for their other appointments. Others scan becasue thats what they were taught.

I hope this helps

First of all, even if every vet scanned every animal that came through his/her office, how would they know whether or not that animal has been found/stolen? Vets don't keep a database of all the microchip numbers. Also, there is more than one kind of microchip. Some vets only keep one type of scanner in their office. If the mircrochip was not the same type as the scanner, no number would come up. It would however, let them know that there is a chip there.
I understand that you're upset but you shouldn't be blaming the vets. I'm very sorry that your cat is lost. I hope she comes back to you.

All my pets are AVID chipped, our local SPCA does it now when they are adopted. I know your pain, I lost my cat this summer as well. The thing with the chips is they can migrate (we had a shepard at the shelter with a chip in his elbow...) I do agree that every animal should be scaned at the vet, even if the vet used the excuse "just want to make sure it didn't migrate" even if the owners say it is not chipped. It sure would help! When I was at the shelter and someone found a stray I would encourage them to bring it in to be scanned. I wish there was a way to add GPS tracking to the chips. Wouldn't that be nice? You cat goes missing you phone it in and get an excat location? Maybe one day!

Of course they don't scan the animal. I've never had my pets scanned in over 17 years.

They only scan if they find an animal. If you take it to the vet they do assume that it is owned by them.

I also use avid for my yellow tabby cat. She is very curious about the outside I was just being careful. I was unaware that they didn't scan the animals. Thank you for this information. I hope that you find Lucy. Take care.

oh my gosh thats so sad. My cat Taz was tattooed i never got her chipped. But my dog hunter was chipper... now that i think of it, the Vet never scanned him. I know Humane Societies do scan them, when i worked at our local I had to scan cats and dogs.

I wish you luck in your search.
