What would be a good argument for why we have a need for tuna fisherman and why they need the job? My daughter has to write an essay and she can't seem to find any resources on the internet or not looking in the right place. Any help would be greatly appreciated. She is 13, so no smart a** answers please.

To His Champ- I am truly sorry if you took my answer as rude. Is surely was not meant to be, I was just stating that if you can not get out to get the paper that since you have internet that it is also a good way to find out the things you need besides reading it in a paper or having to try and get out. I live in a very small town and this is a way for me to find information that I might not normally be able to find other ways.I appreciate your honesty and again I am truly sorry you took my answer the wrong way.God Bless You

I certainly can understand your advance appreciation for receiving help for a genuine, reasonable question in this forum for her essay. My uncle is a harvest superintendent for Starkist and has good input, and there are several simple links that come to mind, but maybe your daughter should know the truth that her mother gives trite, sarcastic smart-aleck answers to other people's real questions rather than going to another that she can answer in a decent, mature manner. I wish you would have extended that common courtesy when you rudely responded to mine. That said, has she tried wikipedia or a tuna mfr. company such as Starkist or Chicken of the Sea and linked onto Contact Us and simply asked the question? Might be worth a shot. Also, Starkist tuna is "Dolphin Safe" and she might go to their site and ask how they protect them, as other tuna company labels usually don't add that onto their labels. Good luck.

A good argument for this is the fact that tuna is nutritous and good for you. If feeds many societies. There are huge industries that employ many who support their families by working in the tuna industry. Think of the demand for protein that would suddenly appear if all the tuna fisherman suddenly stoped and found new jobs. Which protein source (salmon, beef, poultry, etc.) would have to make up the hole left by suddenly no product on the shelves for consumers. One could surmise that it would probably be a affordable source like whitefish. This in all likely hood would desimate the whitefish populations and possibably run them into extinction. While the numbers of tuna would soar in the oceans causing a huge imbalance in the ecosystem.
