The occasion is a 50th Wedding Anniversary celebration.

'in lieu of gifts, we would like to share our happiness with others less fortunate (or in need, or.......) and hope you will honor our request by donating to.... (Katrina relief would be good here).'

The best thing to do is instead of giving everyone a party favor...who really needs more chocolate anyways??...is to put a small card at each place setting and let them know that you made a donation to such-and-such charity in their names. At the bottom of the invitation, just make a note saying the couple doesn't want/need any gifts but only requires your presence to celebrate their day!

Instead of giving us gifts on our 50th wedding anniversary, please donate to our favorite charity, (name of charity), and help those who are not as forunate as we are on our 50th anniversary

I dont think it is proper etiquette- maybe though you can pass it around word of mouth.

Put it on your website and tell friends. If you do get gifts, dont turn them away. If you dont want them, you can still go and donate those gifts to a local shelter in your area.
