You need talent, hard work, and Contacts.

Music conservatory will give all three.

Where there's really the Will there's a way.

try contacting a local film school. their students may be interested in taking you up on the offer to help with soundtracks for their films. you'll probably start out by doing it for little or no money, but this will give you valuble experience and start you on some connections.
the other option is to audit some music in film classes at a film school or at a university; it won't cost you anything, you'll gain knowledge, and you'll be making contacts.

the rest is leg work.

good luck.

Write to Howard Shore and see if he needs an intern.
Check all the persons whose scores you like and send them letters, asking if they need an intern (include your 20 year history).
