i've heard that you make dreadlocks by washing your hair with soap instead of shampoo and conditioner. So, if you get it all tangled and matted first with soap, can you wash it right thereafter and keep the "mess?" and does the soap make your hair smell unclean?

the only way dreadlocks stick is when you don't wash them or wash them properly, dreadlocks are actually just as clean or dirty as natural or undreaded hair is, the only difference is that it is matted hair. you can wash your hair with soap but that would be barbaric now would it to just wash your hair with zest or something, there is a special "dread soap" that you can wash your hair with instead, you can actually wash you hair with shampoo also and it is better if you do this just as long as you use "residue free" shampoo, so residue and smell doesn't build up in your hair, just like in normal hair, and soap doesn't make your hair smell unclean. end of discussion

Hair will smell 'bad' if it is not washed.

My husband who is 45 today used to have dreadlocks. From age 15 through to age 28 years he had dreadlocks. Today I have them kept in a plastic bag to show my son when he gets older what his Dads dreadlocks looked like.

My husband would wash his hair in shampoo, rinse out and shake dry. Thats it. No - it did not smell as he showered twice a day anyway ;)

My husband started his dreadlocks as a surfer and used to just rinse and shake his head. He would use shampoo if he was going out for the evening otherwise when surfing it was rinse and shake during the day.

Hope this helps.

Blessings be yours in peace and light

No, it is soap...it is used for washing things. It shouldn't make it smell bad.

Kind of damaging to your hair though I would think.

That isn't how you make dreadlocks at all. There are several web sites that tell you how to do it. You are suppose to wash dreadlocks.

I had dredlocks for about 2 years before I cut them off.

If you wash them with just shampoo (no or very little conditioner) and don'tbrush, they still make dredlocks.

((Thats how I got mine, I never brushed or used conditioner)
