I work in LA/West Hollywood and live in Van Nuys. I need to find the best way to avoid traffic (obviously this won't be 100%), but something better than the 405. I tried taking Laurel Canyon, but it seems most people know about that alternative route and it almost takes the same amount of time for me as the 405 would. Any suggestions/tips?

You've only got a few options, and they're all kind of bad during rush hour.

1. Laurel Canyon - mornings: generally slow all the way through; evenings: very slow to the top, but faster down into the valley;
2. Coldwater Canyon - mornings: very slow to the top; moderately faster into Beverly Hills; evenings: generally slow all the way through
3. Benedict Canyon/Beverly Glen - hit and miss... sometimes you'll fly, sometimes you'll crawl.

Why are you on the 405 if you're working close to West Hollywood? The Hollywood (170/101) freeway is almost certainly preferable to the 405, and although there are certainly times it's busy, there have been many times I've sailed right through.

Benedict Canyon/Beverly Glen and Sepulveda are good thoughts.... If you're willing to do a little driving, I would go through Topanga Canyon to PCH and drive into WLA. Again all of this is a mixed bag in the rain. Good luck!
