Traditionally a standard case of wine is 12 x 75cl bottles = 9 litres of wine (or 24 x half bottles or 6 magnums).
That 9 litres amount (12x75cl) had a legal significance in UK licensing law.
But nowadays the standard packaging used for wine -- if by standard you mean the one in common use -- is a six bottle box. That is on health and safety grounds -- it is lighter and smaller and thus easier to carry.
Many of us old timers will use the word 'case' only to refer to a 12 bottle package, and half-case for a six bottle box, but most merchants are now calling them 'cases'.
Because of this confusion, it is essential to check when buying wine by the case whether the quoted price is for 6 or 12 bottles.
